Welcome to the first edition of Chiptech Tech News.

We hope you find this email informative and useful. Please let us know if there are any topics you would specifically like to see covered. We will always welcome stories for our 'Installers Corner'.

Pearl Advanced is a specialised help button worn as a pendant, or clip-on pendant. It is designed to detect and summon help automatically if the wearer has experienced a significant fall and also features a help button in case of an emergency. It offers 24 hour reassurance, and should be worn day and night even in the shower and bath.
Pearl Advanced incorporates an accelerometer and uses a comprehensive algorithm to detect a major fall and subsequent impact. It has a unique ‘Shake to Cancel’ feature, giving wearers the ability to cancel false alarms directly on Pearl Advanced.
When a fall is detected, Pearl Advanced sounds a warning beep and looks for significant movement over a fifteen second period. If the person has fallen and does not actively move to cancel the alert, the Pearl Advanced will send a fall alert to the base unit. Shaking the Pearl Advanced following a false alarm will automatically cancel an alert being sent.
The Pearl Advanced can be reprogrammed directly, to a more sensitive setting by installers as well as reconfigured to meet the needs of people with epilepsy (removing cancel feature) and dementia (removing cancel feature and confirmation tones).
Pearl Advanced is now available to place an order or request more information, please contact Leonie:

Pearl Plastic Update

The Pearl pendant and wristwatch have undergone a number of manufacturing changes since the discovery of plastic issues. To date there have been no 2013 dated pendants returned from the field, where they have been subjected to normal use.

The changes introduced are listed below:
  • No regrind in plastic.
  • Annealed.
  • Weld parameters adjusted.
  • Tool change to thicken plastic casing.
  • Light ring (outer clear ring) material is now PC/ABS the same as the rest of the case.
Following every change undertaken we perform a range of tests on the Pearl plastic. The testing includes:
  • Drop tests on concrete to determine structural integrity.
  • Immersion in 60˚C water to determine it is water tight.
  • Chemical tests to determine amount of stress in plastic and determine its resilience to environmental influences.
All Pearl pendants have their button pressed pre weld, post weld and pre despatch to ensure they are functioning as expected.
We are confident that the changes in the Pearl make it robust enough for normal everyday use. The only factor we can prove induces stress cracking is significant exposure to harsh chemicals (some particular perfumes, Deet insect repellent, and some cleaners) which can be absorbed by the plastic and cause it to crack.

As noted in the 'Care of Your Pendant' section on the Customer User Guide:
AVOID direct spraying with perfume, Deet insect repellent or similar chemicals, by holding it out of the way.
CLEAN with non-abrasive and non-polishing cleaners only. Recommended – warm damp cloth is usually sufficient.

ERICA GSM is the latest Personal Response System available from Chiptech. It is designed to solve the challenges associated with a changing telecommunication landscape. ERICA GSM utilises both the standard telephone network and the GSM (2G) cellular network.  It can use just the GSM cellular network if there is no standard telephone network available.
Over forty units have been used by individuals throughout New Zealand in a wide range of locations and we have received a lot of positive feedback.  If you are installing an ERICA GSM please make sure you read the updated installation information in the ERICA and ERICA GSM Installer Manual, which you can download from the web portal
*Installer must check cellular signal strength at the installation site by pressing the Setup button and checking there are between 3 or 4 LEDs displayed on the HELP button.

Universal Local Disconnect Device

Firmware Update:
You can now purchase an updated version of the Universal Local Disconnect Device (ULDD). The ULDD V1.1 has an updated algorithm which will work with older and more troublesome telephones. It is distinguished with a version number 1.1 after the barcode and above the manufacturing date on the front panel sticker.

Installers Corner

It's an oldie but a goodie:
A number of years ago we had a phone call from a rep about a lady with a troublesome cat. He had taken a liking to hopping up on the side table and napping on her medical alarm. Many times he would inadvertently stand on the help button and send a call through to the monitoring centre. After a number of phone calls back from operators and explaining the cat napping, she decided to cover the medical alarm with a large metal colander. Not ideal for devices that use radio frequency as metal objects can reduce the signal. We would suggest wall mounting if you ever come across a pet that has taken a liking to an alarm. The cat was decidedly disappointed by the outcome.

Field Testing on VoIP

Chiptech has recently experienced an increase in phone calls relating to medical alarms having issues over VoIP phone lines. Many of the VoIP providers are  relatively new and have had little experience of medical alarms communicating over their service. We have been gathering a list of providers and  are offering to test over their service to monitoring centers. If you are interested in being involved in this end to end testing process please contact:
