Fall Startup
Hundreds of new Bemidji State students descended on campus Friday, Aug. 23, to move into their new homes in the BSU residence halls. Dozens of student-athletes were on hand to help new residents and their families move their belongings into the halls. The residents have helped BSU's halls fill to about 96 percent capacity.

BSU is welcoming more than 830 new freshmen to campus this year,  up 11 percent over last year. Overall enrollment is expected to be about even with Fall 2012.

Other notes from this year's Fall Startup:

• Demolition of Maple Hall is on schedule to be completed shortly. Approximately 80 percent of the building material being salvaged from the demolition project will be recycled.

• Work is continuing to expand and enhance wireless Internet access in BSU residence halls. Oak, Pine and Tamarack halls are receiving new wireless access points to meet the latest 802.11ac standard that supports high data transfer speeds among a large number of concurrent users. This expansion will bring indoor wireless Internet coverage to more than 90 percent of BSU's residential and academic areas.

• In response to student requests, a 24-hour computer lab is opening in Walnut Hall. The lab will initially feature two workstations and be monitored by cameras as part of a usage study to evaluate the need for future hardware expansion.

• In response to student requests, Dining Services has extended evening hours for full-service meals. This provides more full-service meal options to students with night classes who previously would have missed the facility's dinner hours.
