Relocation Update

As many of you are aware, the Pasadena Unified School District has stated that at some point in the future, it plans to relocate San Rafael school due to the confirmation in 2011 of seismic faults running beneath the campus. At its meeting last Tuesday night, August 27, the PUSD School Board took two actions relevant to the issue of San Rafael's relocation, which is required under current state law. Below is a summary of these actions.

First, the board approved soliciting lease bids for the Linda Vista campus, which many in our community have argued should be an option for our relocation. If the board enters a lease of the Linda Vista site with another school or organization, then relocating our program there would no longer be a possibility. Second, the board approved forming a "7-11 Committee" tasked with determining whether San Rafael should be designated a surplus property, the first step to closing, leasing or selling the school site.

By law, a 7-11 Committee must be created to determine if a school site should be closed or re-purposed, such as leased to a private school or organization. Before the school site can be leased, though, the 7-11 committee process must have been completed.  We are insisting that San Rafael parents be a part of the 7-11 committee.  The formation of the committee does not mean that the School Board has made a final decision about when or where to move San Rafael. We know for certain that San Rafael will continue to operate for the remainder of this academic year at our current campus, and perhaps through the 2014-2015 academic year as well.

Because our school site meets all Field Act requirements for earthquake safety, those of us working on relocation continue to press the District to have a well-thought out plan for our move and to let us stay at San Rafael until a suitable alternative is available. We continue to meet with board members and senior level staff, and we will keep the San Rafael community apprised of any developments. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact any one of us or Principal Rudy Ramirez.
