Greetings!
I hope you had a great summer! As football season and the school year kicks off, so does our 2013-2014 ASHRAE year. I would like to take the time to, first, thank you for your involvement with our local chapter. Without your participation and valuable input, the chapter cannot flourish. For this reason, I would like the theme of 2013-2014 year to be “Our Roanoke ASHRAE – Growing Together”. In an era of individualism, I would challenge you to see the importance in community. Without teamwork and collaboration our work is impossible. I challenge you to consider an active role.
This year we will plan to focus on two things: our members and our community. In an effort to focus on our members we will try to be even more relevant in our programs. Along this theme, we would like to have at least two tours this year. First, plan to join us at Virginia Tech in October for our annual tour. We desire that our programs are directly applicable to your interests, so we welcome your suggestions and feedback. Second, we desire to focus on our community. For years we have supported area college students at Virginia Western and VMI. Your efforts and contributions are much appreciated. In a continued effort to connect with college students we are in the initial phase of trying to start a student chapter at Virginia Tech. We would also like to have the opportunity to reach into our local schools and be an advocate for math and science. We are excited to hear about your ideas for community involvement. As always, our Board of Governors (BOG) meetings are open to all members, so feel free to come and discuss your interests!
Finally, I would like to encourage you to come to our September meeting! Tuesday September 17th at noon we will be discussing “Ice Storage” at Blue 5 restaurant. Ice Storage is an interesting process which reduces peak loads. Come out and learn more about where and how ice storage is used.
Sincerely,
Wesley

Commercial Building Industry Trending Toward 'Green'
RICHARDSON, Texas—The commercial building industry is moving toward greater transparency, higher energy-efficiency requirements, increased sustainability and more responsible use of building materials, according to Lennox. The manufacturer foresees a number of trends leading to a $280 billion global growth in the green building sector by 2020. Among the top trends identified by Lennox are increased visibility and a greater push for net zero energy projects. Lennox says that high efficiency designs are a way buildings industry professionals and companies can differentiate themselves, and transparent declarations of efficiency and environmental friendliness increase their image in the competitive buildings industry. To lower costs, companies are turning to cheap, yet effective measures, such as alternative energy and daylighting. However, Lennox says that HVAC, which accounts for 40% to 60% of building energy use, is "an obvious first item to tackle in greening efforts."

Visiting Earth's Coldest City
YAKUTSK, Russia—Fish markets in Yakutsk, Russia, are literally open as the outdoor air is so cold the fish remain frozen in open crates. When a Swiss photographer visited the Russian city in January, the temperature was –48°C (–54°F). It was so cold his camera froze. With a lowest recorded temperature of –64°C (–83°F), it is the coldest city in the world. However, the city is far from desolate. With a population of 270,000, it is the largest city in Siberia. However, Yakutsk isn't always cold. Despite being covered with a layer of permafrost, it heats up in the summer, with a record high of 38.4°C (101°F).

Doddridge County Schools Make Strides Toward Energy Efficiency
By Katie Anderson
The first day of school is just around the corner and this year every student in Doddridge County will be walking into newly renovated energy efficient buildings.
Doddridge County is making strides to save energy. The elementary, middle, high school and Board of Education building will all be seeing changes to make this possible.
"In each of our schools they are looking at the lighting, and the savings with that, both inside and outside lighting," said Alvin Ross, General Director of Doddridge County Schools.
In addition to new lighting in every building, Doddridge County Middle School has a new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC).
"Our middle school is the oldest of the three which we are now working on 21 years old. The life expectancy of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years so we are in the latter stages of that," explained Ross.
