Risks and Returns of Total Shareholder Return Plans
Hi <<First Name>>,

I hope that you enjoyed your Labor Day.

The WorldatWork Journal recently published an article I wrote on relative total shareholder return plans.  I wanted to share it with you.

It’s about performance share plans that pay based on relative total shareholder return ranking among peer companies and, depending on the chosen peers, whether it is effective at isolating company-specific returns.  Plans that use many, broad-market peers can either reward or penalize executives for broad market returns while plans that focus on a small group of industry peers do a better job of isolating company-specific returns.  I quantify the impact of the market’s influence on payouts and propose some adjustments to the plan’s design mitigate it.

Going forward, I plan on sharing more research, alerts and other thoughts by sending emails to subscribers on occasion.  I look forward to keeping in touch with you and sharing ideas.  Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss your thoughts, research suggestions or anything related to executive compensation.

Thank you,

Andy Restaino
