A walk through the Historic Core is incomplete without seeing our local pups and pooches strutting their stuff. But the other stuff, the stuff some of them leave behind, is becoming a neighborhood issue. Dog urine and feces on our sidewalks and sides of buildings not only creates a smelly situation, but is also a health and safety hazard.
We at the BID are working hard to do our part.
In addition to our daily cleaning of the district:
- We have installed our first pilot Designated Doggie Relief Area on the northwest corner of Main at 6th St. They are deodorizing, pet and environmentally-safe turf installations meant for dogs to do their business. Two more will be installed this month, and with opportunities for more.
- We have placed signage on many of our trash cans to remind pet owners to not allow dog waste on the sidewalk, anything metal, on buildings or on planters. Instead, use a tree well, the outside of the curb, or at a designated area.
In order to remedy this, we need to work together as a community. If you see someone letting their dog use the bathroom at an inappropriate place, say something. A friendly, neighborly reminder is sometimes all it takes.
Thank you for your help in keeping our neighborhood healthy, clean and safe for people and pooches alike.
