Withrow Market News - September 7
Are you happy or sad to see the beginning of the end of summer? We don't care as long as there's good local food accompanying the change of seasons!
Coming Sept 14: Stone Soup Community Lunch & Fresh Produce Drive with the Friends of Withrow Park & Lisa Shamai, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.! Donate a veg purchased at the market to the communal soup pot & make a gift of fresh food to the Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre food bank. All proceeds collected at the lunch will also be donated to the food bank. Please share with your contacts & bring a friend!
Colleen is back with Coffeecology roasted & freshly brewed coffee! (A sip of that should put a spring into your morning step!)
Jay from Danbrie Farms has been excited to expand his local food activities over the past couple of years, & is adding home-grown produce to his repertoir: "I’ve got my tomatillos this Saturday, as well as my tomatillo salsa to sample and purchase. I also have miniature musk melons, and some miniature honey dew melons." Jay is also bringing a fresh batch of maple butter!
Fruit season is still going strong, so we encourage you to get your fill of Feast of Fields' certified biodynamic selection: yellow & white peaches, plums, raspberries, blackberries, apples ("Gala’s amazing taste, crisp Macs AND maybe Freedoms"), Bartlett & Asian pears, wild blueberries, everbearing strawberries, & maybe figs.
The Healthy Choice Farm will have a great produce mix of carrots, beets, onions, garlic, zucchini & patty pan squash, beautiful leeks, celeriac root (fantastic in soups!), celery, purple beans, tomatoes, parsley, bell peppers, cilantro, salad mix & more.
And good things are growing on Fiddlehead Farm: "This weekend we will have our first harvest of Mesclun Salad Mix and Arugula. Our regular greens of chard, kale (four kinds), sorrel, and beets will be on hand. Our heirloom tomato bonanza will be back along with some freshly dug potatoes. Yum."
The Fresh Veggies will bring another batch of beans, beets, carrots, garlic, okra, potatoes, tomatoes, & Swiss chard.
You'll also find fresh produce from Potager du Kanada (honey, too), Kind Organics (incl. herbs, chocolates & more), Cookstown Greens, & Haystrom Farm (who also has some fruit); prepared foods from Eudora's Fine Foods (Indian sauces, preserves), St. John's Bakery (artisanally crafted sourdough breads), & Sweet Sammies (ice-cream & ice pops); meats from Field Sparrow Farms, & Murray's Farm (who also has eggs, veg & pickles), the ever so popular fish tacos from Hooked Inc. (as well as fresh & smoked fish), & cheeses & other goodies from Monforte Dairy.
Tiffinday is actually missing this market day (we made a mistake in last week's issue, so if you were surprised that you saw Seema at market on Aug 31 after all, that would be why), and will return on Sep 14, along with Webers' Natural Meats (& eggs) & Manning Canning (preserves). Brian Hamlin, who is busy with his honey harvest, returns Sep 21.
Happy September, and you'll find us in the park every Saturday until October 26, rain or shine!
