3) FYI/Invitation to Part of Nation-wide Campaign

The Council of Canadians has partnered with CUPE to launch a nation-wide campaign that will pressure the Federal government to renegotiate a fair Health Accord. We have a chance to protect and strengthen universal health care in the upcoming 2014 Health Accord.  We need to make sure that Islanders have access to the same high quality health care services as those in other Canadian provinces.

The campaign will be rolling out in three provinces in 2013! In PEI the two-week campaign starts September 7th and ends September 21st.  The Council of Canadians, CUPE and other allies, will be organizing workshops, public outreach campaigns, and media-grabbing events including a Town Hall September 16th from 7pm to 9pm at the Loyalist, 195 Harbour Dr. Summerside and a Community Festival for Public Medicare September 21st from 11am to 2pm at Britannia Hall, Canada Rd., Tyne Valley.

We need as many people as possible to become educated about the 2014 Health Accord and start sharing the information with friends, family and neighbours. You are invited to attend one of the workshops (see the list below) where you’ll learn more about the Accord, the campaign, and gain skills on how to talk to people about health care and the role of the federal government. This campaign will bring about an opportunity to speak to people in the Egmont riding about the absence of the federal government on health care and put pressure on Gail Shea to stand up for the health care of all Islanders.

If you have time to attend a workshop, volunteer during a door-to-door canvass, or attend the townhall and community festival, please be in touch! For more information or to sign up for a workshop or to volunteer, please contact Leonard at: 2014pei@gmail.com  or Leo Broderick at lcb45@eastlink.ca

The PEI Food Exchange is a new project organized by volunteers to help provide improved nutrition to low income Islanders and families. We are looking for people who would like to receive fresh produce and help themselves at the same time. We are connecting those in need with those with extra feed. Many Island farmers are not able to bring in all their crops and much prefectly good food is left behind in the fields or on the vine.

We are collecting names of people who are:
  • Interested in picking crops in exchange for food
  • Gleaning fields which have been harvested already
  • Volunteers to drive others to glean and pick
  • Interested in learning how to grow your own food for free
  • Interested in learning food storage preparation like chow chow and salsa making workshops for free, we will eventually offer workshops in bread making, baked beans, bee keeping, menus on a budget and much more to interested folks
Eventually we hope to offer a very affordable healthy food basket service to supplement the Food Bank service. Would U be willing to pay a small fee to participate in such a basket which would include meat from local farmers and possibly other dairy products? Such as 20$ a month for singles and 40$ a month for families??

We are also looking for gardeners with extra produce who wish to contribute their surplus to us for redistribution.  We are looking for the names of seniors and disabled folks and shut ins who would like to receive extra nutrition. Please pass our information along!!!
