We've been moving and shaking the past few months, traveling the state putting on workshops, attending fantastic bike advocacy events, and planning for this October's 4th annual Georgia Bike Summit in Roswell. We also have a swanky new website design, which we hope will make it easier for you to find all the resources you need to make your community a bike friendly place to live, work, and visit.

Ponce Ave Gets Bike-Friendly Make-Over
Thanks to the statewide "Complete Streets" policy we won in 2012, GDOT is working with the City of Atlanta to convert motor vehicle lanes to buffered bike lanes on the very busy (and dangerous) Ponce de Leon Ave in Atlanta!

Complete Streets Workshops
Thanks to funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), we have been traveling to cities across Georgia to educate transportation planners and engineers on Complete Streets implementation, with an emphasis on lane conversions, refuge islands, and best practices from the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide.
Many thanks to our co-presenters for making these workshops a great success: Brad Davis (ALTA Planning+Design), Josh Mello (City of Atlanta), and Dan Pass (GDOT).

Law Enforcement Training
Georgia Bikes has trained hundreds of local traffic enforcement and state patrol officers on your rights and responsibilities as a bicyclist on the public roadways.

End-of-Summer Parades Celebrate Cycling
Athens, Atlanta, and Savannah all held amazingly fun events to promote and encourage bicycling, and we got to experience all three!

GA's "Strategic Highway Safety Plan"
The Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) is a federally mandated statewide plan for addressing roadway safety. The plan is jointly managed by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety and the state DOT.
The SHSP creates state-level "safety goals and performance objectives" that direct the planning, programming, and funding of roadway safety educational campaigns and infrastructure.
Georgia Bikes represents the interests of bicyclists by serving on the Non-Motorized User Task Team. We're busily updating the SHSP and look forward to sharing the new plan with you! |
