TWAK: This Week At King's. September 8th-September 14th, 2013.

THIS WEEK AT KING'S
September 8th-14th, 2013

Honestly, at this given moment, I feel just like that little green guy at the end of an episode of Just for Laughs Gags. It’s made me a little teary eyed that the Frosh Week festivities have come to a halt. This past week has been an epic bonanza-of-a celebration. I have to keep on telling myself that this being King’s, there will be bonanza after bonanza. To avoid confusion, I must make it explicitly clear that I’m not referring to Merriam-Webster’s definition of bonanza as an “exceptionally large and rich mineral deposit”. Although I really wish King’s did stumble upon an exceptionally large and rich mineral deposit. We’d all become semi-rich and moderately-famous… pretty much the cheap Canadian spin-off of The Beverly Hillbillies.

p.s. Official Frosh photographer Erica Guy comes through yet again with some more rad Frosh photos for this week's TWAK. How wonderful of her.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE (WEEK 2: THE SECOND ONE)

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th

ACTION! KING’S! MEETING
Wilson Common Room, 4PM
This meeting will be a brief orientation for new Action! King’s! members. The meeting shouldn't go much longer than 5:30. Please, even if you are running late, do try to come. Guess what! There are REFRESHMENTS!

CUBE INTERMURAL SOCCER
King’s Gym, 10PM
What is CUBE you ask? It is an intermural sports league put on the KSU and run by the lovely and talented CUBE Coordinator Anders every Tuesday and Thursday. Tonight, the sport is intermural soccer and I truly don’t think there could be a better way to spend the evening. Grab your girls, grab your boys and head on over to the King’s Gym.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th

SODALES DEBATING SOCIETY MEETING
Dalhousie SUB Room 307, 6PM

Are you interested in debating at Dalhousie and King's? Come meet members of Sodales, enjoy refreshments, and watch some of Canada's best debaters do their thing. In our second century of operations, Sodales represents Dalhousie and King's in the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate. Members join Sodales to improve public speaking skills, meet new friends, travel, and gain leadership experience. New members are always welcome, and no prior experience is necessary. Check it out on Facebook.

WUSC FIRST MEETING
Manning Room, 7PM

World University Service of Canada (WUSC) is an umbrella organization with local committees across Canada that fundraise for and promote international equality. The King’s chapter focuses primarily on the Student Refugee Program, which allows King's College to give displaced students the opportunity to study in Halifax. And guess what folks, food and beverages will be provided!

KING’S SQUASH SOCIETY TEAM INFORMATION MEETING
Manning Room, 7:30PM

Did you know King's now has a squash team? That's right! For those of you looking for a bit of competition, exciting out-of-province trips, and some coaching, this is for you! Fortunately, for every one else, the squash society will not be disappearing. Come find out about your squash opportunities at King's, both competitive and recreational. Players of any and all levels (including those who have never played) are welcome!

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th

CUBE INTERMURAL HANDBALL

CUBE & The Gang are back… it’s basically CUBE 2: Judgment Day, but with handball. European Handball was always one of my favourite sports in elementary school. You know what was really freakin’ awesome though… tchoukball. That’s one bad ass sport.

KSU NEWS

This week, the KSU heavily promoted their No Means No and Consent is Sexy campaigns, in response to the orientation week events at SMU. With the help of the student body, the KSU created a Consent is Sexy video, which is well on its way to being viewed nearly 2,000 times. Here’s a message from the KSU Executive in response to the SMU events.

Dear Students,

Some of you may have already heard the disturbing news regarding the St. Mary’s Orientation Week. On Wednesday, St. Mary’s Orientation Week frosh leaders were caught on video leading their new students in a song celebrating and encouraging the sexual assault of underage women.  If you would like to learn more about the incident, we welcome you to peruse the internet on reliable news sources– there’s a lot of information circulating.

The King’s Students’ Union was very sad and very angry to see that the St. Mary’s University Student Association would perpetuate sexualized violence, especially when we at King’s put so much work into fighting sexualized violence on our campus and making safe spaces for our students.  We wanted to reach out to you all to let you know that activities that encourage sexualized violence are not tolerated at King’s – this community is devoted to making our campus and the Halifax community a safe space for everyone, especially women.

Every year, we train our Frosh Leaders to engage with our students with respect and to make them feel comfortable on campus. In addition, we bring awareness to campaigns that promote consent and seek to end sexualized violence.

Talking about safe spaces is something we value at King’s. If you don’t know what consent means – talk to someone.  If you’re confused about what rape is or rape culture – talk to someone.  If you want to know what sexualized violence means- talk to someone. If you want to make positive change – talk to someone.  Your student union, your dons, and your peers are here for you, so we can make this campus and this city safer.

As a response to this, your student union and your frosh week team create our own video – one celebrating consent and safe spaces.

If you’d like to get involved in our No Means No campaign, our Challenge Sexism Campaign, or do anything in response to the SMUSA Orientation Week, please email Anna Dubinski at president@ksu.ca.  I’d love to hear from you and get to work.

Yours,

KSU Exec and Frosh Coordinators

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

I’ve been receiving many Compliments ® about this column over the past couple of days, so let’s keep it going. There’s no Chef Boyardee in your future this week.

TUESDAYS: Word on the street is that the Action! King’s! meeting (Wilson Common Room, 4PM) may or may not be catered by the Galley. So freakin’ tasty. After securing some snacks there, rush on over to Saint Andrew’s United Church down the street from King’s, which is offering University Student Suppers every Tuesday (corner of Robie and Coburg, 5:30PM). They’ve got salad, home cooked food, ice cream and GREAT CONVERSATION. It’s a win-win situation for all.

WEDNESDAY: You can start your Wednesday food adventure off at the Sodales Debate Society Meeting (Dalhousie SUB Room 307, 6PM), where they promise refreshments. Then head back to King’s for WUSC’s First Meeting (Manning Room, 7PM) which will be serving up complimentary “food and beverages”. What could that mean? Well my friends, IT’S A WORLD OF POSSIBILITY.

If you'd like to see your announcement in the next TWAK then make sure to send your event to cvp@ksu.ca by 11:59PM on September 14 2013. It's a great time in the league for submitting your event entries in early.
