A Life of Dignity for All

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon"The new agenda must ensure the equal rights of women and girls, their full participation in the political, economic and public spheres and zero tolerance for violence against or exploitation of women and girls."
Ban Ki-moon

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will convene a special meeting this month (September 25th) to review current efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals following his recent report on the issue that had a strong focus on gender equality and empowering women and girls. April 5th this year marked the point of 1,000 days remaining to take action to meet the Goals.

The event will provide Member States with an opportunity for rallying political support for the acceleration of the MDGs. It will also serve as an occasion to reflect on the broad outlines of the development agenda beyond 2015. The Secretary-General recommends that Member States use the special event to generate clarity and a solid momentum for the important discussions and decisions that will follow.

Miss Representation in the UK

Earlier this month we held a members screening of Miss Representation, a documentary film by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, with KPMG’s Network Of Women (KNOW) and the International Women’s Forum (IWF). The film explores women’s under-representation in positions of power and influence and challenges the limited and often disparaging portrayals of women in media in the US.

After the screening there was a lively discussion considering parallels with the media context in the UK and what can be done to tackle the misrepresentation of women across media channels here. Read more about the audience's reflections in our blog here.
