Welcome to Martha Kisling's Creative Watercolor!

After much traveling over the summer, August has been a month of settling back into teaching weekly classes, a workshop and finishing some commission paintings. It is still very warn here in Colorado but last week we had major rain and hail, causing flooding like I have never seen before on our side of town - I think I am ready for a little fall weather and for things to calm down a bit. Check out my Back To School Art Sale in my Etsy Shop - more info below!

Be sure to check out my blog to see past postings and more of my art and you can also subscribe to this newsletter if you haven't already. Check out past newsletters here.

We spent the first week of August moving our daughter Lisa to Kansas City to start medical school. They had a wonderful ceremony and reception where they presented the students with their own white medical coat - they will wear a longer one when they are officially doctors in four years. Here she is showing us the campus and sitting in her cute apartment - such an exciting time for her!

Fri Oct 15, 2013 - 10:00 to 4:00 - Colorado Springs

Join me for a fun and creative day of painting watercolor on Yupo, a synthetic paper with a slick surface that allows for all sorts of wonderful painting techniques. We will spend part of the morning playing with different techniques to apply paint, lift, roll, burnish, stamp, stencil and texture. Then we will apply these to three different floral paintings. Workshop Fun!

Here are some photos from my latest Watercolor Batik Workshop. We spent a fun and creative day painting pretty columbines and aspen trees using watercolors, melted wax and rice paper. Blue was definitely the color of the day for the batiks and what we were wearing! You can check out all of my workshops on my website

Commission Paintings

I recently finished two large (20x28) commission paintings for a lovely couple from Canada. They wanted watercolors of the location where they got engaged (shown above) and married, for their home. I felt honored to be able to help them to commemorate such a special time in their life. Do you have a location that holds special memories for you? Hometown? school? Vacation? Please contact me if you would like to discuss a commission painting. MarthaKisling@msn.com

I love painting big, colorful tropical flowers like theses hibiscus. We don't have many flowers like this here in Colorado but I have loads of photos of gorgeous hibiscus blooms from our visit to the beautiful island of Kauai several years ago. I applied the watercolor paints through tissue paper to create a lace like effect for the flowers and background.

Watercolor Brushes

Brushes are either synthetic (man-made), animal hair (sable or other) or a blend of both. Synthetic brushes are more affordable and animal hair is suppose to hold more water because of their natural hair. When I first started painting I used Loew Cornell Series 7000 synthetic brushes and after trying many other brands over the years I still prefer them. They are affordable, come in all sizes, hold the paint well, come to a nice sharp point for detail and spring back into shape for painting control (not too soft). I do most of my painting with a #14 round and a 1 1/2 in flat shown above.
