Withrow Market News - August 31

Just because we're kissing August goodbye, it doesn't mean summer's over! Not to mention that we have two more months of fresh Ontario produce ahead of us. So get your veg on this market day!!

Coming Sept 14: Stone Soup Community Lunch & Fresh Produce Drive with the Friends of Withrow Park & Lisa Shamai, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.! Donate a veg purchased at the market to the communal soup pot & make a gift of fresh food to the Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre food bank. All proceeds collected at the lunch will also be donated to the food bank.

There won't be any coffee this Saturday since Coffeecology's Colleen is taking a wee break. Missing this one out are also the Webers, Manning Canning, and Tiffinday. All will return soon and their respective dates are listed below.

Did you notice that St. John's Bakery has added new items to their freshly baked lineup? Spotted and scooped up were cinnamon buns, brioches, and other goodies.

Sticking with the sweet theme, this weekend Sweet Sammies will start bringing "take-home tubs of ice cream (12 ounces each for $7)." Sanober says: "I will bring assorted flavours each week and welcome advance orders of specific flavours that the market customers would like to pick up on Saturdays. All our ice creams are made from scratch, using natural flavours, without artificial preservatives."

Expect more peaches (like Red Haven & White Lady) from Feast of Fields as well as
"deep blue Italian plums, raspberries and blackberries, apples (at least 2 varieties, but maybe more), pears (Bartlett, tiny Asian), wild blueberries, maybe some melons."

Brian Hamlin is also back with some of "this week's newly harvested honey... as well as my other usual sweet suspects." Because Brian will be doing most of his harvesting in September, he'll be back again on the 21st.

Fresh Veggies will bring "Tomatoes, Potatoes, Okra, Salad mix, Swiss Chard, Beets, Carrots, Beans, Peas. Plus Garlic by the bulk."

Haystrom Farm is bringing more water- & muskmelons! Also to be expected: more corn! Lou will also be offering soy beans (for edamame for sure), apples: (Ginger Gold, Paula Red, maybe even Macs), maybe some Italian plums, pears, & an assortment of other veg (peppers, onions, potatoes, & more).

Murray’s Farm  will be your go-to for duck, turkey, & heritage chicken eggs, as well as Tamworth pork, & a selection of pickles (dill, bread & butter, icicle, green beans). Also in the mix will be Roma & mixed cherry tomatoes, as well as other produce.

And there is more good produce coming from Fiddlehead Farm: "beets, carrots, kale, chard, salad mix, potatoes, zucchini, patty pans, and mountains of heirloom tomatoes. We have cherry, salad, and beef steak styles. We will also have our chicken sausages again too."

You'll also find: Potager du Kanada (produce & honey), Kind Organics (greens, herbs, & much more), Cookstown Greens (produce), Eudora's Fine Foods (Indian sauces, preserves), Field Sparrow Farms (meats), Hooked Inc. (fresh & smoked fish, fish tacos), Monforte Dairy (with an unbelievably amazing choice of cheeses), and Danbrie Farms (maple syrup).

Returning soon: Coffeecology (fair trade organic coffee) & Tiffinday (vegan Indian ready to eat foods) -  Sep 7; Webers' Natural Meats (& eggs) & Manning Canning (preserves) - Sep 14:

Happy Labour Day long weekend!
