PERTH ROYAL SHOW

 This year the SMRC will be teaming up with Guru Productions and our compost partner Nutrarich to show Perth how what they put in their bin a few weeks ago becomes a valuable resource – compost.

A DAY OF CELEBRATION AT CHRIS FERREIRA’S SUSTAINABLE GARDEN
Sunday 8th September 2013
From early morning to sundown, Sustainability expert Chris Ferreira will open his garden to celebrate sustainable practices and provide tips to all who are interested in creating gardens for the future.
 Chris has totally made over his traditional 1950s block into an inspiring garden suited to today’s climate and lifestyle. The garden features sustainable food production, greywater systems and waterwise species. New plantings include deciduous trees, vines, sheltering windbreaks and a native garden.
Throughout the day there’ll be delicious food – including wood-fired pizza, teas and homemade muffins – available to purchase.
Chris will be talking regularly throughout the day about the development of his sustainable house and garden. Between 10am & noon Steve Wood will talk about Growing vegetables and between1pm and 3pm Sabrina Hahn will share her ideas on Creating joyous family friendly gardens.

NATIONAL OP SHOP WEEK
More and more Australians are turning to charity op shops to buy clothes. However, charity op shops still need good quality donations. Making a donation can help op shops from running short of stock.
Boosting donations to charity op shops is the aim of the second ‘National Op Shop Week’. An initiative of the DoSomething! charity in partnership with the National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisations (NACRO), the event runs from August 25th to September 1st.
In 2012, Australians donated over 300,000 tonnes of items to charity op shop stores (equating to 13,200 40 foot containers). Of that:

126,000 tonnes were reused by the community - either given away by charities or sold through charity op shops.
-
30,000 tonnes were recycled (for example some donations are torn into wiper rags - mainly through disability workshops).
-
42,000 tonnes of low grade goods were exported to developing countries.
-
60,000 tonnes were unusable and disposed of in landfill – the cost for this is borne by the charities. That’s why only good quality items should be donated to charity op shops.

Waste Audits
The SMRC will be conducting Waste Audits in the Cities of Cockburn and Melville in the coming months to measure the impact of the introduction of weekly recycling to these areas.

BABY BANDICOOT
A tiny baby bandicoot has been spotted by staff at the RRRC in the conservation area. The availability of food, the temperature, rainfall and even the length of sunlight in a day can influence the number of young bandicoots a mother has each year. On average the female bandicoot will have around three young in each litter and between two and five litters per year. The most common time of year for breeding is between June and December.
We will attempt to safely get some photos by remote sensor camera to see if there are more than one!

TOURS
 Tour Coordinator, Emily Tomsett can provide your school, community group, family and friends with a fantastic tour of the Regional Resource Recovery Centre in Canning Vale. The tour takes 1.5 to 2 hours and includes a stroll through the conservation area, the Waste Composting Facility, Audit and Green Waste Facilities and finishes in our state of the art Materials Recovery Facility Education Centre.

MRF BALE STORAGE SHED
Bale Storage Shed Construction
A contract has been awarded to CPD Group to construct a new Bale Storage Shed beside the Materials Recovery Facility.
The work includes a 600m2 storage shed for baled recycled and a loading dock for sea containers.
The site has been cordoned off with construction fencing and earthworks have begun.
The shed is scheduled to be finished in December.

COMMUNITY ADVISORY GROUP
The Community Advisory Group is an independent group of devoted community volunteers who work actively to increase the community understanding of recycling. They meet between February and November each year.
