1) Cap-Net UNDP at Stockholm World Water Week (SWWW) – 1 to 6 September 2013, Stockholm.

During the SWWW which was held from 1-6 September, Cap-Net UNDP and partners convened a session on “collaborating in networks for water capacity development" and took part in various workshops to share 11 years capacity development experiences notably the panel discussion of the session “science and art of water cooperation”. Cap-Net also participated in several planning meetings contributing to future event planning in various subsectors, and strengthening the partnership with stakeholders for integrated water resources management. Of special note was presence at the Global Water Partnership (GWP) network and consulting partners meeting the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) strategy formulation and consultation process, the International centre for water management services (CEWAS) think tank meeting.

Cap-Net also took part in the panel discussion of the session “science and art of water cooperation”.  The session was convened by Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science Technology; SaciWATERs and UNESCO-IHE – Institute for Water Education, UNESCO-PCCP (IHP/WWAP) programme.  The workshop debated how to bridge the gap between the science and art of water cooperation. Importantly, the workshop highlighted promising examples of collective action, and demonstrated how knowledge can best be translated into effective training, education, institutional development and action. For more information please contact us at info@cap-net.org or themba.gumbo@cap-net.org.

2) Symposium Announcement: 14th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA Symposium - 30 October to 1st November 2013, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

On behalf of the 14th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA Local Organising Committee, CapNet UNDP would like to extend the invitation to you to attend the upcoming Symposium to be held from the 30th of October to the 1st of November 2013 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The theme for this year’s symposium is “Building Partnerships and Strengthening Cooperation for Integrated Water Resources Management in East and Southern Africa”. The Symposium is a platform for water professionals to share advances in research and education related to Integrated Water Resources Management. It is the place to discuss new opportunities and developments towards the integrated management of our scarce fresh water resources. It is also the place where we should attempt to cross boundaries: look over disciplinary fences and think across national borders.

Any queries regarding the 14th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA Symposium programme can be made to the WaterNet Secretariat; Rennie Chioreso Munyayi (rchioreso@waternetonline.org) or Rozemarijn ter Horst (r.terhorst@unesco-ihe.org). For registration visit click on this link.

3) Groundwater Management for African Basin Organisations (ORASECOM) training – 23 to 27 September, 2013, Johannesburg, South Africa.

A recent BGR study concluded that there is need to raise the knowledge and to provide the tools to BO’s to enhance groundwater management within the IWRM context. This recommendation was further discussed with the partners (AGW-NET, CapNet, IGRAC, IWMI, ANBO) during a workshop in Burkina Faso in February 2013 and a joint decision was taken to develop a course on groundwater for African BO’s as a useful follow up. This initiative is also supported by the Global Water Partnership (GWP), Internationally Shared Aquifer Resource Management Project (ISARM), International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), the African Ministerial Council on Water (AMCOW), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

AGW-NET was the focal point for conducting the course which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa from the 23- 27 September, and will lead the discussion on how to modify and finalize the course manual the course for its use in other African RO’s, how to disseminate the course and how to plan for the upscaling of the course delivery in the coming months/years.

4) 5th WACDEP Technical Coordination Workshop - 23 to 28 September 2013, Kigali, Rwanda.

Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP) has organised the 5th WACDEP Technical Coordination Workshop which was held in Kigali, Rwanda. The programme was developed as response to the January 2009 AMCOW request for GWP to support the implementation of the 2008 African Union Sharm el-Sheikh Declaration on Water and Sanitation. The WACDEP aimed to integrate water security and climate resilience in development planning processes, build climate resilience and support countries to adapt to a new climate regime through increased investments in water security. By building climate resilience, the initiative contributes to peace building and conflict prevention, supports pan-African integration and helps safeguard investments in economic development, poverty reduction and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The programme responds directly to the commitments expressed by African Heads of State in the Sharm el-Sheikh Declaration on water and sanitation. The overall objective of this workshop was to support integration of water security and climate resilience in development planning and decision making processes, through enhanced technical and institutional capacity and predictable financing and investments in water security and climate change adaptation. The activities in the workshop included the Financial Management Meeting, 2nd Reference Group Kick-off Meeting and Training Material Testing meeting.
