Welcome to Beaver Nation!
In this edition of the Newsletter:

Welcome to the First Year Experience

This is an exciting time to be on campus with the pilot year of the university's First Year Experience (FYE).  We have been busy preparing for your arrival and there are a number of opportunities that await you on campus.  Whether you are a first year student or a returning student, take advantage of the resources in the residence halls - peer tutoring, faculty dinners, and regular one-on-one meetings with your RA.

As you move in your room and get settled, remember that the first few weeks of the year are all about making connections to the other students living on your floor, in your residence hall, and within the campus community.  Be sure to attend your all-hall meeting and the various events associated with CONNECT week.  Don't miss out on these activities, which are designed to help you meet other students and transition to college life.

Connect with other students online through social media.  Make sure to sign up on your hall's Facebook page so that you can interact with other students who live in your residence hall, and follow the hall Twitter account so you can get regular updates about what's going on in your community and around campus. See the UHDS social media directory.

Getting connected and staying connected will help you make the most of your first year living on campus, and ultimately your entire college experience - an Experience of a Lifetime.  You are now part of Beaver Nation.  Share your stories - from the first year and beyond, at #BeaverFYE.

Ben Medeiros, Assistant Director for Living Learning Communities

Squeezing in physical activity

Student’s lives require a lot of sitting; in class, studying, all night video-game marathons. .. Many students find they’ve suddenly become less active then they once were.  Learning to incorporate more physical activity throughout the day is a valuable habit you’ll need once you’ve left campus. Check out the list below for some ideas on how to add more physical activity to your day.

  • Ditch the car. Whenever possible choose to walk to locations within a reasonable distance.
  • Catch up on foot. It’s great to be there for your friends; but that doesn’t mean you have to listen to their issues while lounging on a couch! Suggest a walk while you chat.
  • Turn your TV into a personal trainer.  Using TV time for active time turns a sedentary habit into an active opportunity!  Try push-ups, sit ups, lunges, yoga poses while you watch or during commercial breaks.
  • Take 5. Avoid sitting for longer than 1 hour. If you’ve been sitting for a while take a 5 minute break and do something active. Try going up and down a few flights of stairs, walking around the building once or some jumping jacks.
  • Change the weekend routine. Weekends don’t have to include stacks of movies and pizza boxes; discover more active ways to have fun with your friends. Try bowling in the MU basement, swimming at the Dixon Pool, sign up for a table tennis tournament with RecSports intramurals (no experience necessary), plan a hike on one of the many trails the Corvallis area offers.

Moving more throughout the day helps sustain energy levels, provides mental breaks from studying and plays a role in maintaining a healthy weight.  Extra activity throughout the day shouldn’t replace a regular schedule of cardiovascular, muscle strength and endurance and flexibility exercise.
