                      Gravestone Restoration Workshop

                              September 21, 2013*

9:00AM-3:00PM

The Friends of Evergreen in partnership with the Portland Department of Public Services are hosting a Gravestone Restoration Workshop at Evergreen Cemetery.
Ta Mara Conde, Historic Gravestone Services will be leading this  workshop where participants will learn how to properly restore and preserve Evergreen's monuments.Teams will form to work on stones pre-selected and approved for treatment. Beginning with documentation, condition assessment and photography, each stone will then be cleaned and reset. As individuals repeat the process working to conserve the gravestones, they will be able to explore different situations and learn the proper approach to the solution.

All participants should dress for work, including work gloves, for the hands-on portion of the workshop.

The fee for this workshop is $10 and will be collected on the day of the event.

        History Highlights: Zinc Monuments

Walking through Evergreen Cemetery is a visually invigorating experience.  Our eyes always seem to focus on something new – something we haven’t seen before even though we may have walked this route on so many occasions.  The next time you are enjoying the beauty of Evergreen, let your eyes scan the panoramic view of the monuments and look to see the light reflecting on the cool blue/gray hue of the zinc markers sparsely scattered throughout the cemetery.

The Civil War and American Art

Co-sponsored by Maine Historical Society and
Bowdoin College Museum of Art

Speaker: Eleanor Jones Harvey, Senior Curator, Smithsonian American Art Museum

Mark your calendars for a very special Civil War program at Bowdoin College's Kresge Auditorium this fall. Maine Historical Society is pleased to partner with Bowdoin to present a talk by Smithsonian Curator Eleanor Jones Harvey, whose acclaimed exhibition, “The Civil War and American Art” is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The exhibition opened in late 2012 at the Smithsonian to high praise. It examines how America's artists—such as Winslow Homer, Eastman Johnson, and Frederic Church—represented the impact of the Civil War and its aftermath. The New York Times calls it a “gripping show… that sheds light on how the nation experienced its fratricidal conflict.” Harvey's book, The Civil War and American Art, which serves as an exhibition catalog, may be purchased at the MHS Museum Store or the Museum Store Online at www.mainehistorystore.com.
