Fall Means "Back to School"

Can we ever shake that crisp-September-morning-back-to-school feeling? I am honored and excited to have been part of the Stamford Innovation Center's InnovationED planning and launch team for Fall 2013. They are kicking off the season with an Open House, featuring a talk on "The Digital Media Opportunity: An Evening with Marc Michel of Metamorphic Ventures."  Check out the classes on the InnovationED tab of the website, or sign up directly for something (especially my book group on The Startup Owner's Manual! see below) from the Innovation ED eventbrite page,

Where Do You Find Customers for Lean Customer Research™?

We are collecting stories, tips and tricks for an upcoming article. See our latest blog post: "Lean Customer Research™ is more than Trolling Starbucks for Captive Customers" to get the conversation started.

“70 is the new 40. At Least When it Comes to Mobile”

Thanks to the NYC User Experience Professionals Association(NYCUXPA) and Tammy Sachs of Sachs Insights for the excellent research and presentation last night on “Getting to Know the ‘Newly Mobile Senior Set’.” Seniors (men and women in the study were ages 60 – 85 across the US) are using tablets and smart phones increasingly, continually, and for all sorts of activity, from leisure to healthcare monitoring, to managing finances. They learn how to use mobile devices traditionally—reading the manual, attending classes, one-on-one tutorials. No trial and error for these folks. Are you including them in your product vision? In your research? In your usability testing? On your design team?

New Research Kicks Off: Can the Big Guys Innovate? Can the Little Guys Scale?

There’s a belief that large corporations do not innovate quickly—they’re too risk averse, too focused on near-term revenue, too wedded to status quo. Startups and small businesses, on the other hand, have great ideas, take big risks, can get to market quickly. But they can’t operationalize; can’t scale. Is this myth? Reality? What are you doing to break the mold? Our IdeaWorks believes that great things are possible when large and small companies borrow from each other’s culture, and even better, co-innovate. We are kicking off research to understand the topic and uncover best practices. Contact Ivy to be a part of it.
Those of you who are in Open Innovation or Innovation Management recognize the situation all too well. Those of you not there are saying “what is Innovation?” or “What is Open Innovation?” Those of you who are my parents are saying “I have no idea what you are talking about. What the heck do you do for a living anyway?” If you’re my sister you’re saying “Why does your logo have a face inside the lightbulb?” Hint: it’s not a lightbulb. It’s two people happily co-innovating. And PS: a marketing expert assured me that light bulbs would be around long enough for me to use as a logo for awhile.

Thanks,
— Ivy Eisenberg
