Calendar Highlights

Happy September!  It is starting to get a little cooler, a lot of clubs are having camp-out weekends and National Orienteering Week happens this month. Let’s head to the woods!

Happy National Orienteering Week: September 21 - 29
It’s so big; it’s more than a day…more than a week!  National Orienteering Week is a great way to get new folks to try our sport and join your club.  Many thanks to our 35 clubs that are hosting events this month.

World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships
MTBO Team USA 2013They're back from Estonia and ready to help grow the sport - congratulations to the first full (men & women) US MTBO Team. The US now has both male and female MTBO athletes ranked in the Top 100 worldwide. In addition to being the type of orienteering conducted at the fastest speeds, MTBO is fast growing and has the youngest average participant age. Contact MTBO Chief Greg Lennon if your club would like help making MTBO maps or organizing events.

Thanks again to the donors and sponsors (AutoPilot map boards, Swiftwick Socks, and Showers Pass) who made this possible! OUSA hopes to expand the Team next year to include Juniors in the fun - after all, in the words of Team USA member/manager Joe Brautigam (who took the Gold in his age class in the Men's Long Distance Open race in Estonia), "it's just such a blast!"

World Military Orienteering Championships
Congratulations also to our team that just competed in the World Military Orienteering Championships in Sweden.  Representing our country and our sport were: 1LT Joshua Wang (Army), LTC Liam Collins (Army), 1LT Kevin Culberg (Army), 2LT Hannah Culberg (Army), CDR Grant Staats (Navy), LCDR Jeremy Debons (Navy), LT Virginia Debons (Navy), MAJ Maiya Anderson (Air Force), MAJ Joseph Burkhead (Air Force).

A full article on the World Military Orienteering Championships can be found in an upcoming print issue of Orienteering North America magazine.

Junior Team News
U.S. Junior Team Coach, Erin Schirm, will be attending most Fall A-events. So, if you are going to any, be sure to check event information for planned junior activities. In September we are planning to post a Request for Proposals for clubs to apply for junior development grants of up to $500.

How to Save on Choice and Hertz?
There seems to be some confusion on how to save with Choice Hotels and Hertz…and how OUSA can benefit.
  1. Go to www.orienteeringusa.org
  2. Click on the appropriate logo linking you to the company
  3. Register on-line
If you go straight to the hotel or the rental facility, you may not get the discounted rate and OUSA will not get any benefit. And when you're redeeming your Choice Privilege loyalty points, don't forget there's a very wide range of products and services to choose from in addition to free hotel nights.

If you have any questions, email Glen at gjs@orienteeringusa.org.

It's Annual Fund Time
Be on the look-out for envelopes in the next two issues of Orienteering North America magazine.  Thanks for remembering OUSA.

Digital ONA Is Coming Soon
The annual digital version of ONA will be coming out this month with LOTS of pictures and information about the WOC events this past summer. Regular members (not associate or day members) of Orienteering USA members get access to this a week or so before it is available to the rest of the world. There will articles and pictures from the Mountain Bike Team, the Junior Team, the Senior Team and the Trail-O Team. We hope that you will enjoy it.
