Latham Square Needs Your Help

In August, the city of Oakland commenced a pilot program to open Latham Square-the first block of Telegraph where it meets Broadway -to pedestrians and bicyclists instead of cars. While all indications are that the  pilot went well and traffic was not negatively impacted, some folks at the city objected to the idea of making any public space car-free and will likely recommend that the City Council reject this experiment in putting people first. In the meantime, the City has opened one lane to cars, diminishing pedestrian safety and bicycle access.

Many local businesses, residents and workers are strongly in favor of connecting Uptown and Downtown with a pedestrian plaza. Youth Radio, Awaken Cafe, and the PopUpHood are sponsoring events at the temporary plaza. If you'd like to see this space designed for people rather than cars, take a minute to enjoy the plaza, like it on Facebook, and please sign the petition at WOBO.org.

Walk the Bay 2013 Rocks!

Walk the Bay 2013 was a huge success last Saturday, with California WALKS, WOBO, and Walk SF joining forces to lead a walk across the Eastern Span's mutli-use path.  Our 28 participants took in some awesome views, and learned about the lobbying efforts that resulted in the creation of the Alex Zuckermann path.

It was a wonderful opportunity to bring walkers together from across the region, and collaborate with our awesome neighboring walking organizations.

Hope to see you next year, and be on the look out for future regional walks in the future!
Come on down to Temescal Alley on Sunday, November 10th, from 12-4 pm, for the first annual Novemberfest featuring local craft brewers and tasty sausages grilled up by Pizzaiolo.

Buy a glass and enjoy fantastic beer tastings from places like Linden Street Brewery, Drakes Brewing, Ale Industries, and Calicraft, as well as several local home brewers.

And the best part is that proceeds benefit WOBO! So come out, get some great beer, and support our work.
WOBO had the opportunity to attend the first 2013 Walking Summit in Washington DC, put on by Every Body Walk!

Even though the government was shut down, community organizations from across the nation were hard at work collaborating, networking, and learning about how to implement complete streets in their hoods.

It was so inspiring to see what wonderful work is being done across the country to improve walk infrastructure and community health. We made some great allies, and can't wait to take lessons learned back home to Oakland.
