Board Members Wanted. NCR Marathon Coming in November.

Seeking Board Members!

As we approach December and our 2013 General Membership Meeting, we are looking to you, our members, to solicit your interest in helping BRRC in a unique way, by serving on our Board of Directors or as an Officer.  According to the BRRC By Laws, "The Board of Directors shall manage the affairs of the Club between Club meetings, shall determine the agenda for Club meetings, shall plan Club functions, and shall do all things necessary to maintain the Club as an ongoing organization."

Beyond this general description, we are looking for Directors who can help manage key aspects of the Club, including communications (e.g. website, newsletters), accounting, membership, race directing, and event planning.  We know that many of you have specialized capabilities that can help BRRC be successful.  Please share your expertise with your fellow runners!

Many of our current Officers first served as Directors, and then stepped up to an Officer position.  Become a Director to learn about how the Club operates.  Lend your special skills to gain experience that can then lead you to become an Officer.  The rewards of helping to lead this organization are many, most importantly knowing that you are helping BRRC grow and thrive.

To learn more or to place your name on the ballot for December's meeting and the election of 2014 Officers and Directors, contact us.

We look forward to your participation.

NCR Trail Marathon Coming In November

Marathon and Two Person Relay
Saturday, November 38, 8:30 am

Join us on the Saturday after Thanksgiving for the 24th running of the Northern Central Rail Trail Marathon and Two Person Relay.  The race will begin at 8:30 am at Sparks Elementary School.  The course follows Belfast Road to York Road south to Sparks Road to the NCR Trail.  The next 22 miles of the race are run on the NCR Trail, from Sparks to Bentley Springs, and then back to Glencoe Road back to the finish.  It is a flat, fast certified course that produces many Boston qualifiers.

Complete information can be found at the NCR Trail Marathon website.

Volunteers are needed for the race.  The morning is a great experience for club volunteers.  If you would like to volunteer, contact Brian Flowers.

Join Us For Jim's Gym Day

We were contacted by a former colleague of Jimmy Harrison’s who currently teaches at Dumbarton Middle School.  She is organizing an event which will be held at Towson University in honor of Jimmy and his work with children in the sport of running.  Called "Jim's Gym Day", this event will be held at Burdick Field from 8-11 AM on Saturday, November 2.  The target audience will consist of elementary and middle school participants.

Many of you probably do not know Jimmy since he was one of the “old school” runners in our club.  He was highly decorated as a BRRC runner and was inducted into the BRRC Hall of Fame in 2011.  Jimmy passed away far too young last June.  As one of his dying wishes, he asked that anyone wishing to do so could make a contribution to the BRRC.  Through the kind generosity of some individuals, contributions of $1,690 have been received.

The request is simple:  in need of people to help out at TU on Saturday, November 2, 2013 from 7:30-11 AM.  Assigned duties will be much of the same that we are all familiar with - no special training required - just the desire to lend a helping hand and reap the joy of the smiling faces of those who plan to run.  You will not be disappointed in giving back some of your free time.

Former Jim Harrison student, Baltimore County teacher and school administrator, and BRRC member Michelle Benson has volunteered to be the POC for us in coordinating volunteers on our behalf to participate.  Please contact Michelle to let her know of your availability.  Also, please spread the word to your friends, family, and other Club members in the event they may be interested in volunteering for this worthwhile endeavor.

We hope you will consider supporting this event---what a great way to foster Jimmy's vision for children's running.

Quote of the Month

“It was being a runner that mattered, not how fast or how far I could run. The joy was in the act of running and in the journey, not in the destination. We have a better chance of seeing where we are when we stop trying to get somewhere else. We can enjoy every moment of movement, as long as where we are is as good as where we'd like to be. That's not to say that you need to be satisfied forever with where you are today. But you need to honor what you've accomplished, rather than thinking of what's left to be done (p. 159).”
― John Bingham, No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running

New Renewal Schedule

Please note that beginning in January 2014, BRRC will renew all members at the beginning of the year.  This means that your renewal for 2014 will be due in January.  This change will allow the Club better management of membership and qualification for the Grand Prix Series and other Club awards.  Thank you for your understanding as we make this change.
