Jan K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to name the Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program (ELAPP) in honor of the commissioner who championed this ground-breaking mission for local preservation. ELAPP has now been formally named the Jan K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program -- a tribute to the woman who implemented and nurtured the concept decades ago. The entire Board of County Commissioners praised Ms. Platt for a career known for integrity and dedication. Commissioner Platt was also presented with a commemorative award for her immeasurable contributions to this initiative. Hillsborough County's ELAPP, the Jan K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program, has now preserved more than 61,000 acres of sensitive County lands and its flora, fauna and wildlife.

Now's The Time To Check Clocks On Sprinkler Systems

Your bedside alarm clock, wristwatch and wall clocks aren't the only timepieces to adjust when daylight saving time ends on November 3. Check the timer on automatic sprinkler systems to avoid a fine for watering at the wrong time. If the system has a back-up battery that hasn’t been changed in awhile, now would be a great time to do that. For complete information on watering restrictions, visit www.HillsboroughCounty.org/Water. This is also a good time to test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, and to install fresh batteries.

Have a Cyber-Savvy Day

Americans from every walk of life lead digital lives, and the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners recognized October 2013 as Cyber Security Month. From desks and homes to mobile devices, online activities take place 24/7. Cyber security maximizes our ability to grow commerce, communications, community and content in a safe, but connected world. As a measure of responsibility to educate, practice and address the importance of cyber security, Hillsborough County's ITS Department launched an awareness campaign for employees and the community. Throughout October, postings on Facebook and other social media outlets are messaging daily tips to encourage best cyber-practices at home, work, school and more.
