Withrow Market News for October 12
Happy Thanksgiving long weekend, market friends! Our vendors have loads of seasonal goodies for your feasting pleasure. As is usually the case at this time of year, Feast of Fields' season at the market has sadly ended, but we're already looking forward to having them back in 2014, starting with cherries. For now, check in with Murray for Macs & Spartans.
In the spirit of the holiday Saint John’s Bakery will have pumpkin scones until the end of the market season, as well as their usual array of baked goods. So nice with a cup of fresh brew from Coffeecology. Yes, coffee's back, and market mornings look bright again!
Tiffinday will have the usual: “timpa wheels, delicious veg curry and rice, potato vadas.... But, we will bring in FROZEN samosas - an old time favorite! Bake in your oven for 15 minutes, and there you have a great appetizer for Thanksgiving. They sell out quickly, so don’t hesitate - 10pcs per pack for $15.”
If you've ordered fresh turkey from the Webers, it'll be ready for pick up this market day. If you don't have need for a turkey, there'll be frozen chicken, many other cuts of meat, as well as eggs and their ever so popular summer sausage.
Besides Mac & Spartan apples, you’ll be able to find fresh sage at Murray’s Farm table this market, as well as 1.5 lb bags of frozen sweet corn niblets, butternut squash, pie pumpkins, cranberry relish, Harvard beets, 5 & 10 lb bags of potatoes, and 3 L baskets of carrots & onions. Murray will also have his usual Bekshire & Tamworth pork, grass finished red veal, & pastured lamb from his neighbour, heritage chicken eggs, and a couple extra fresh heritage and large hybrid turkeys. Ask Murray about his “freezer boxes”, and about his recent newspaper interview.
Hooked's product list for this market day includes: Yellow Perch, Pickerel, Silver Bass, Trout, Whitefish Caviar, East Coast Chowder, Wild Salmon Tandoori Chowder, Lobster Bisque, Crab cakes, Fish Cakes, Fish nuggets, and Smoked Trout. Of course, you can also get a fish taco or more for instant consumption. (There's so much, that it was tough to pick a highlight for this issue.)
Cookstown Greens will, among others, have their “Heirloom Roaster Mix: onions, potatoes, beets, turnips and carrots, for an easy Thanksgiving dinner. All you need to do is chop in large chunks, toss in some olive oil, salt & pepper, some mixed herbs perhaps, and roast at 350-400F for about an hour. So many great flavours in a few easy steps to accompany your turkey. They're popular so come early to make sure you get yours!”
Healthy Choice Farm will have a whole bunch of veg for sides & mains: carrots, beets, celeriac roots, celery, salad mix, spinach, arugula, leeks, cilantro, garlic & more.
Fiddlehead Farm messaged that “Watermelon Radishes, Sweet Potatoes, Cabbage, Turnips, Beets, Potatoes, Kale, Spring Salad, Mesclun Salad, Baby Kale, Baby Bok Choi, Arugula, Onions, Leeks, Patty Pans, Zucchini, and BEANS! are all up for delicious feasts this Saturday.”
Haystrom Farm still has, amazingly, more tomatoes! There'll be several varieties of potatoes (including Russets for baking), pie pumpkins & squashes, more sweet multicoloured peppers, cabbages, onions and more.
Apiarist Brian Hamlin invites you to “Enjoy tastes of nectars collected from our local urban wetlands, forests and islands. Thanksgiving honours pollinators for their contribution to environmental health and the great variety of food we give thanks for.”
Also at market: produce from Potager du Kanada (honey, too), Kind Organics (sprouts, salad mixes, kale chips, & more); Danbrie Farms maple syrup, Monforte Dairy cheeses, & Eudora's Fine Foods.
Absent this market day, but returning Oct 19 are Field Sparrow Farm. Manning Canning is sadly back again only for the last market day on Oct 26.
