Future of London October 2013 Update

October 2013 Update -
Acronyms, Bermondsey, Crossrail

Dear Colleagues -

With party conferences over, London's abuzz with events and lectures on issues affecting the capital. As always, Future of London's offerings focus on delivery, and include practitioner field trips and breakfast seminars which tackle everything from BIDs to VNEB, via CIL, ECO and PSBP (if you know all 5 acronyms without checking, please join our Urban Pub Quiz team!).

We had great response to our first Communities in Transition field trip to Bermondsey and are looking forward to the next, in Shoreditch on Oct 30th. We also launched Future London Leaders Round 6 recently with a strong and varied group, and host the inaugural session in our Leaders Plus masterclass series on October 15th.

Looking ahead, Crossrail and GVA will co-sponsor a Future of London programme on regeneration around Crossrail stations - through research, case studies and partner projects, we'll look at where it's working, why, and what can be done where investment hasn't yet materialised.

Finally, we've changed our Twitter handle from @news_FoL to @futureofldn. Yeah, we think so too.

To find out about programmes, membership, or partnering with us on a project, please feel free to contact me at lisa@futureoflondon.org.uk or 020 7251 6725.

Best wishes and see you out there!

Programme highlights

Breakfast Bites: School planning, infrastructure funding, and BIDs

School planning
This autumn, we’ve partnered with Lewis Silkin for a series of breakfast seminars focused on hot topics facing built-environment practitioners. The series kicked off earlier this month with a great session on Planning for School Places.

The series continues on Oct 24th with Forecasting Infrastructure Funding, and wraps up on Nov 12th with a seminar on Working with BIDs. Details on these events, including how to register, are here.

Leaders Plus: new masterclass series

Leaders Plus
This month marks the launch of a new career development programme, Leaders Plus – the ‘next level’ of the Future London Leaders programme. The nine-month series of masterclasses provides an array of tools as well as senior-level insight and mentoring, to support candidates as they take on roles of increasing responsibility and risk. We’d like to welcome the 13 candidates joining us from across London’s public sector for Round 1 of the programme, starting Oct 15th.

London 2062 book launch

London 2062 Book
In the spring of 2012, Future of London partnered with UCL’s Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities to deliver the London 2062 event series. Building from that programme, contributions from both leading academics and practitioners have been collected in an anthology – Imagining the Future City: London 2062. UCL is hosting a book launch Monday, 18th November 2013. More details on this event are here.

Energy Efficiency Series: Getting the most from RE:NEW and ECO

Energy Efficiency seminar
Our Energy Efficiency series in partnership with EDF Energy continues November 8th with a breakfast seminar  on how the delivery of energy efficiency across London is progressing, partly through the lens of the RE:NEW programme. The discussion will touch on assembling large-scale retrofit programmes, financing, procurement, data issues and delivery options. You can find more information here.
