While traveling through the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland, the owner of Canada’s famous COWS CREAMERY fell in love with a traditional Scottish Cheddar recipe and brought it back to his own Island of Prince Edward. The result: Avonlea (named for the Anne of Green Gables books set in Avonlea Village, PEI), the only clothbound Cheddar made in Canada and the Grand Prize winner of numerous national and international awards.
Prince Edward Island is known for its incredible natural beauty and distinctively red, iron-rich soil, on which lush pasturelands grow and the resident herds of Holstein cows graze. Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar is made purely from the highest quality milk collected from small, rural, local dairy farms. Each 22 pound wheel is lovingly aged in COWS CREAMERY’s temperature controlled cheese-aging cave for 12 to 14 months. The bandage wrapping allows the cheese to breathe, moisture to evaporate and flavor to flourish.
