The North Wind

Winds of Change!

Hello friends, and welcome to our 2014 Expedition newsletter.  Before we get onto business however, we have some very exciting news that we couldn't be happier to be sharing!  Kielyn and I have just purchased 40 acres of paradise off Moose Lake, which is just north of the western end of the Lacloche Range, or just west of the town of Espanola.  This is an exciting and scary time for us.  The property is an old patent mining claim - there is no road access to the property, no hydro, and absolutely no other private properties in the vicinity.  We'll get in and out of our home by boat in the open water season, and snow machine in the hard-water season.  An endeavour like this has been a dream of ours for some time, but so has Lure of the North, so our plans are to work hard to make both a reality at our new slice of heaven.  We know the learning curve will be steep and there will bumps on the road, but we hope that you'll continue along this journey with us as we learn how to run a home and a business in the woods. Ultimately we know this adventure will vastly improve the skills and experience that Kielyn and I can offer, and the possibilities of what we can do with Lure.  We hope you're still with us for the day that our first expedition wraps up with a sauna by the lake at the new Lure basecamp!
We're staying patient and waiting until next spring before starting work in earnest at Moose Lake, so as to avoid any disruptions to this year's workshops and expeditions.
You can see photos of the new place here.

Winter Expeditions 2014

The big news this newsletter is the completion of our winter expedition lineup!  We always get excited for every changing season, and the new activities they'll bring, but we start to get really excited once we have some definite plans - that's when we can really start to envision and wonder about what all these upcoming adventures might bring!  This year we have a special "Eco Explorers" with winter ecologist extraordinaire Dr. Gerard Courtin, a return to the Mighty Missinaibi, a 5-day exploration of the David Lake - Chiniguchi region, our always popular Killarney Intro, and a second intro-level trip to the Summit of Mt. Ararat in the Lacloche range.

You can view the trip schedule temporally at our calendar; spatially at this fancy Google Map, or pictorially in our store.

New Products Continue to Roll Online...

We continue to be really excited about all the new products that we're rolling out this fall, and we hope you are too!  Here's what's new since our last newsletter:

Northern Book Recommendation: Through Black Spruce

Canadian author Joseph Boyden's first book: "Three Day Road" was such an incredible story, that I approached his next novel tentatively, worried it couldn't possibly live up to the first.  "Through Black Spruce" didn't disappoint and is the first book in a long time that has kept me up late into the night wanting to find out what happens next to Will and Annie Bird in their struggles and triumphs from their home on the James Bay coast to points south.  I was thrilled when I found out Boyden has a third novel about the Bird clan: "The Orenda". So I guess this newsletter our book recommendation is really three books as much as one.  Enjoy!
Through Black Spruce on Amazon.com.
Thanks for reading, and don't forget there's still time to get in on one of our many Fall Workshops, or join us for the Missinaibi Film Premiere on Dec. 4th.
