Nerge students heed Rachel's Challenge

Nerge School students and staff are ready to start a chain reaction of kindness in part to a powerful presentation at the school on Oct. 4 called Rachel's Challenge.

The speaker at the school that day told all students and staff that Rachel’s Challenge is designed to inspire individuals to replace violence, bullying and negativity with kindness, respect and compassion. After the initial presentation, sixth-grade students had further training in how to form a Friends of Rachel Club (FOR Club), which will meet throughout the school year to ensure the kindness promoted through Rachel’s Challenge will continue. The sixth-graders shared how they felt about the initial presentation and role-played some strategies they could use when they saw individuals who were not treating someone with respect.

The day also included a community event in the evening at Mead Junior High School.

Rachel's Challenge was inspired by Rachel Joy Scott, who was the first victim of the Columbine High School shootings in 1999. Shortly after her death her father found an essay she wrote for school that talked about a chain reaction of kindness.
