Autumn Programme 2013
This season three themes of exhibitions occupy our central corridor (Zone B). To kick things off you have the dynamic combination of Bath Open Studios (BOS) and Faces {Bath} presenting the very best of the Bath arts scene. Moving along the corridor, you are greeted by Eurovisions: A celebration of European landscape painting. Marco Cazzulini has taken inspiration partly from the Botanical Gardens in Bath and Mark Sands has successfully captured an essence of place and time in Portugal.
Our exhibition programmes continues across the hospital, providing Bath with one of its most accessible exhibitions spaces, opened 7 days a week. With the temporary exhibition programme changing across the hospital this month, we’re certain you’ll have something interesting to see during your next visit.

The Sleep Project
Inspired by the soundtrack ‘Things that go bump in the night’ St. Gregory’s College and a team of arts practitioners created The Sleep Project. They performed for the public at the new theatre at Hayesfield School and then toured to 9 local schools.
Practitioners also ran workshops at each school creating some great pictures describing insomnia; nightmares, sleepwalking and other domestic sleep issues. The exhibition, which was first shown at Hayesfield School, is now on show at the RUH along the central Artsparks corridor.
Stephen Magrarth, Lead Artist said, “They really engaged with this important subject matter and used their imagination or in cases illustrated personal experiences of sleep problemsâ€.
Funded by the Wellcome Trust and led by St Gregory’s Catholic College this was a multimedia art-science investigation involving ten schools in the Bath Area.
Participating schools included; St Gregory’s Catholic College, Bath, St Johns Primary School, Bath, St Martin’s Garden School, Bath, Three Ways Special Needs School, Bath, Weston All Saints Primary School, Bath, St Pauls Primary School, YatE Trinity Academy, Radstock St Benedict’s Primary School, Midsomer Norton, St Andrews Primary School, Bath and St Patricks Primary School, Corsham

Combe Ward Redesign to Support the Transformation of Care for Patients with Dementia
As part of RUH Bath’s ambition to be an exemplar of best practice in dementia care, Combe Ward has recently undergone an impressive transformation into a more patient focused area. With Art at the Heart sitting on a dynamic multi-disciplinary group, we have been implementing the dementia strategy by commissioning large-scale wall art in 3 areas of the ward. These include: Somerset Levels donated by artist, Bluebell Woods by Artwork Solutions and Balloons Over Bath by Nick Cudworth.
Somerset Levels image was part of a call to photographers to offer images of the region, of which we reproduced and framed 17 images of the local landscape. We selected images from approx. 12 photographers and would like to thank all for their generosity.
Subject to funding we wish to combine this project with work from the Hospital Notes Creative Reminiscence Workshops and will be asking ward patients to help create reminiscence panels as part of the final elements of the redesign.
News
Following on from the enormous success of the pilot reminiscence workshops, our Activities Facilitator, Frankie, is currently providing weekly performances and reminiscence activities on Pulteney, Midford and Combe ward.
The Hospital Notes programme is now running a referral system, allowing us to share music and activities with more patients.
Whilst visiting the RUH, Health Minister Norman Lamb was treated to a performance by Frankie and commented on the hospital’s dementia care saying it was “way ahead of the gameâ€.

I Year Anniversary of
Brass Monkey by Bruce Munro
One year on, and Brass Monkey is proving as popular as ever with staff, patients and visitors. The piece which was designed exclusively in celebration of the Royal United Hospital’s 80th Birthday will eventually be moved to its permanent home – the RUH Cancer Care Centre in two to three years’ time.
Controlled by light conditions, the light installation can now be viewed earlier in the evening, and at its brightest around 7:30 - 12pm.
“It brightens the place up, is endlessly fascinating, reduces the clinical feel, does wonders for the morale and mood, and allows me to get some exercise as I specifically like to see them. Wonderful stuff!†Staff Member
