Barcamp Tampa Bay is one of the first programs that received funding through the Economic Development Innovation Initiative (EDI2).  On the last Saturday in September, robot builders, code writers, Google Glass designers and about 750 other techies gathered at the USF College of Business to hear presentations, talk tech and network. EDI2 is the first program of its kind in the State of Florida.  This program, an initiative of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, is focused on building a vibrant and sustainable startup community.

This week, Hillsborough County's Board of County Commissioners proclaimed October
6 - 12 as Fire Prevention Week. The 2013 Fire Prevention Week theme, Prevent Kitchen Fires, serves as a reminder to stay alert and use caution when cooking to reduce the risk of kitchen fires.  The proclamation helps raise awareness and reminds us to check our kitchens for fire hazards, use safe cooking practices, and support the many public safety activities and efforts of Hillsborough County fire and emergency services. Additionally, Fire Rescue staff accepted the proclamation in their special uniform shirts to show their support of the Pink Heals campaign, which is also during October and honors women fighting breast cancer.

Parks, Rec and
Conservation Update

Looking for experts to lead fun, hands-on activities for kids of all ages? Let the Lettuce Lace Park Rangers come to the rescue with themes from fossils to photography and holiday gift making. Park Ranger programs accept walk-ins but prefer advance notice for large groups.  The cost is just $5 per child, and while a parent must accompany the participant, adults are welcomed to join in, too.   For more info, call Lettuce Lake Park at 813-987-6204.

Westchase Gymnasium Ribbon-Cutting Celebration

Across town, a recent ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Westchase Gymnasium revealed a huge fitness resource for all ages.  The new center's located at 9791 Westchase Drive in Tampa (next to Westchase Elementary School).  The 10,000-square-foot facility is now officially open and fast becoming a busy hub of health, nutrition, and sports activities for everyone from seniors to toddlers.  If you go, prepare to be awesome!

Call Center Hours Extended, Trash Trucks
to Work Longer

The nation's largest one-time roll-out of automated garbage and recycling collection debuted in Hillsborough County on Sept. 30, and staff is making every effort to accommodate customers.

While drivers for the three collection companies are adjusting to new routes, new schedules and new trucks, customers can also assist greatly in this transition by using their County-provided roll carts correctly.  Instructions were given upon delivery, and the educational campaign continues.  For more information, visit:
