October market produce
Withrow Market News for October 5

Signs that summer is over: 1) Our farmers will have a fantastic selection of ingredients for your fall comfort foods, rain or shine! 2) Thanksgiving’s just over a week away. 3) No more Sweet Sammies until next year. :o(

Field Sparrow Farm will be taking Thanksgiving weekend off, so be sure to stock up. And because the outdoor market season end is nigh they are "taking orders for our 20 lb beef freezer boxes which will allow people to stock up for winter. They contain approximately 6 lbs. ground beef, 6 lbs. steak (marinating and grilling), 2 lbs. stew beef, 1 pot roast and 1 oven roast.”

Feast of Fields is the go to destination for bakers & “frugivores”, because they’ll have a “great selection of apples (Mac, Crispin, Gala, Empire, golden and red delicious) and pears (Bartlett, Anjou. Bosc and Asian), grapes (Concord, seedless blue, maybe Niagara), maybe some blackberries.” This may be their last week, but we'll keep you posted.

How about adding a twist to your holiday food tradition? “Having family over for Thanksgiving? Tiffinday’s Timpa Wheels ARE the best appetizers! Pre-order your tray of 100 Frozen Timpa wheels for $50. While we no longer bring our well-loved Samosas to the market, they are available frozen by pre-order, 10 pcs for $15. Orders in by 3 pm on Friday to email info@tiffinday.com will be brought to the market for pick up on Saturday.”

Haystrom Farm still has more Roma and San Marzano paste tomatoes, so there’s still a chance to preserve them. Among all the “lasts” we also have some “firsts” of the season, like Brussels sprouts and savoy cabbage. Also to be found on Lou’s table: pie pumpkins & squashes, a rainbow of sweet peppers, red & green cabbage, sweet and regular potatoes, eggplants, some more corn, and a few more Mac apples.

And since this is the 4th market day from the end, Murray's Farm is starting to make plans, too: “I’m offering ‘freezer boxes’ for the off-season. Minimum $150 & up to $249, pick & choose your cuts and receive 10% off retail prices; orders $250-$499:15% off; over $500: 20% off.” Speak with Murray at the market, call
519-658-6770 or e-mail. Oh, and he’ll bring some Cranberry Relish and heritage chicken eggs, of course.

The Healthy Choice Farm will dazzle with another beautifully tasty selection of carrots, beets, celeriac, garlic, salad mix, cilantro, salad turnips, Daikon radish, radish micro greens, leeks, and more.

“The Fiddlehead Farm table will be overflowing again this week with a full selection of greens (baby kale, arugula, Mesclun Salad, Spring Salad, Kale, and spinach). Turnips are finally in and we will have more Sweet Potatoes out. Potaoes, onions, beans, beets, radishes (French Breakfast and Easter Egg Mix) and baby carrots round out the table this week.”

Cookstown Greens is down to the last of their corn, but will be sending butternut & potimarron squash this weekend
(if you like chestnuts, you'll like potimarron). Of course, you’ll still find a selection of all sorts of other veg, including… greens!

Eudora’s Fine Foods is back with “tomatillo chutney made with organic tomatillos from Caledon. A little Mexican influence usually referred to as salsa verde, but since ours is cooked it’s more of a condiment than a dip.”

Also at market: produce from Potager du Kanada (honey, too), Kind Organics (sprouts, salad mixes, kale chips, & more), & Danbrie Farms maple syrup; St. John's Bakery artisanally crafted sourdough breads, scones & more; fish tacos, & fresh & smoked fish from Ontario's lakes & fish farms from Hooked Inc.; & Monforte Dairy cheeses+.

Absent this market day, but returning Oct 12 are: Coffeecology (Colleen is ever so sorry about this), the Webers (who will then be with us until the rest of the season), and Brian Hamlin (his one and only day for the season remainder). Manning Canning is sadly back again only for the last market day on Oct 26.
