What does the Chamber board do?

The Chamber Board of Directors represents the members as the organization's ultimate authority. Until the organization can hire an executive director, the board both determines and implements all short and long-term priorities of the organization, including carrying out the day-to-day activities of the organization. Among the board’s responsibilities are:
  • Attend regular monthly meetings, held on the second Wednesday of every month from 3-5 p.m. at the Elko New Market library.
  • Deliberate and approve policy positions of the Elko New Market Chamber of Commerce.
  • Support the Chamber by attending as many Chamber events as possible.
  • Assist in membership recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Support and serve as spokespersons for Chamber policy positions and participate in the annual strategic planning session.
  • Enhance the public image of the Chamber.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Chamber in achieving its goals and mission.
Seeking nominees: The Chamber is currently seeking nominations for the board. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining the board, please contact Todd Anderson, president, at 612.910.2260 or president@enmchamber.org. New directors will be elected at the Chamber's annual meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

Eligibility: Candidates for the board must be active members in good standing and must have agreed to accept directorship responsibility.

Terms: Directors are elected to three-year terms, and may serve a maximum of two back-to-back terms.  All newly elected board members shall be seated at the regular December board meeting but shall not participate until the first board meeting of the following year.

Officers: Officers are selected at the January board meeting. These positions include president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. If elected an officer, board members will have additional responsibilities as outlined in the bylaws to fulfill that position.

Ambassadors: The Chamber board may have several Ambassadors, whose responsibilities include:
  • Welcoming new businesses to the area
  • Calling members periodically to encourage participation in Chamber activities
  • Helping with registration at events
  • Calling lapsed members
  • Thanking members for renewing their memberships

State of the County Address Recap

Scott County in 'Good Shape'

Nearly 50 people gathered at The Firehouse Grille in Elko New Market recently to learn about the “State of the County.” The event, hosted by the Elko New Market Chamber of Commerce, drew representatives of business, education and government who heard Scott County Administrator Gary Shelton explain how the county has achieved long-term fiscal stability while minimizing tax impacts to residents and spurring economic development.

“Structurally, we’ve offset nearly $17 million in federal and state funding reductions and cost shifts – that’s 21 percent of our operating budget,” Shelton said. “We have the lowest rate of expenditures per capita in the metro area and we’ve limited levy increases. The average annual levy increase has been 6/10ths of 1% -- well below the level of inflation and new construction growth. We have the third lowest tax rate in the metro area.”
