Travels on the Tea Road at Lan Su Chinese Garden


A collaboration between The Tao of Tea and lan Su Chinese Garden
The Tao of Tea, in collaboration with Lan Su Chinese Garden presents an experiential month-long series of events titled "travels on the Tea Road". Tracing the origins of tea and the cultures it has touched, these events include tea tastings, slideshows, tea-blending workshops, tea study, and, of course, tea drinking in the beautiful setting of the garden.

Attendance to all "Travels on the Tea Road" events are free with regular garden admission or membership.

Movie Night:
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Based on the novel by Lisa See, this is a story of the lifelong friendship between two girls in 19th-century China who devise a secret code to bypass the rigid cultural norms of the time. Directed by Wayne Wong. In English. 137 minutes.
 
"Movie Night" is an opportunity to watch a Chinese movie (or a movie about China) with friends over dinner. It is one of the China Council's educational programs, with a discussion of the film led by a NWCC director or volunteer. Dinner, tea and snacks can be ordered from the Red Robe Tea House & Cafe. A $5 donation to NWCC is suggested, but not required. Space is limited, so please register soon.

A Japanese Perspective on North Korea

Dr. Shigemura is professor in the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies at Wasesda University in Tokyo, and a renowned scholar of North Korea. He will present a Japanese perspective on the current situation in North Korea.  He will discuss:
  • U.S. and North Korean Nuclear Negotiations and “clashes of mutual ignorance of culture”
  • The new leadership in North Korea—its relations with China and South Korea
  • The diplomatic conflicts between Japan and South Korea
  • Future of the U.S – Japan, U.S. South Korea Alliance

Navigating China - An Oregon Lawyer's Experience

Mum-Vember at Lan Su Chinese Garden

Stunning Chrysanthemums Bring Fall Speldor to Lan Su

The Largest Display of Chrysanthemums on the West Coast
During November, Lan Su Chinese Garden will be packed with more than 500 potted chrysanthemums artistically displayed throughout the garden. In addition, prize-winning cut blooms from the Portland Chrysanthemum Society will be featured.

Mum-vember events also include: a talk on the care and feeding of mums with expert Ray Gray of King's Mums Nursery; a lecture on the use of mums in traditional Chinese medicine with the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine; and guided walks from Lan Su's horticultural staff.

As the Chinese character for chrysanthemum is ju - which means "gathering together" - Lan Su invites visitors to come discover this magnificent plant throughout November.
