Thanksgiving fun; gone squirrelly!

Having a time (& turkey!) at Kings Landing
Visitors to the historic village of Kings Landing, west of Fredericton, can time travel to the 1800s by helping villagers make butter, fill wood boxes or spin wool — or perhaps learn some of the recreational pursuits of the day such as the country dance shown above! Next weekend, October 12-14, you can also take part in its Thanksgiving Festival. Activities include a pumpkin carving, apple games, tug of war, and traditional roast turkey dinner with pumpkin pie. Yum. More information here.

House (and property) proud
Ever marvel at how tidy PEI seems to be? The natural beauty of the countryside is complemented by immaculately maintained private properties with meticulously cared-for buildings and exceptional landscaping — and that’s no accident of nature. Find out about the not-so-secret society that fosters PEI’s characteristic pride of place.

Rethinking the Conventional Lawn
Fall is always a good time to start reflecting on what to do differently on your property next year, so your dreams get translated into well-thought-through plans. If you are wasting precious time mowing, worried about pesticides and the environmental burden generally, or don't like the water bill, maybe it’s time to consider having greener grass, or replacing some of it altogether.

Good-bye bats?
Populations of the little brown bat are vanishing at an alarming rate in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia — they are being decimated by a fungus called white-nose syndrome, which disrupts their hibernation over winter. Read about the so-called plague — including why you should care and how you can help — here.

BBQ'ing squirrel??
Saltscapes readers have told us to cut back on the squirrel focus… but then this photo came in over the transom! Over the past few years Nancy Rose, of Bedford, NS, has photographed her backyard squirrels in elaborate miniature sets, with cleverly hidden treats (peanuts!) that compel them to act in humanized ways. Want to see some of the props and staging tricks of the hobbyist’s trade? Nancy will be at Argyle Fine Art, in Halifax, today from 1:30-3:30pm. (Calendars and postcards are also available.) More information.

International Regional Magazine Assoc Awards
While we love feedback from readers (the good, the bad and even indifferent), getting accolades from peers is especially sweet. Shown here is Shawn Dalton, Saltscapes associate publisher/creative director, accepting awards on September 30 at the annual conference of the International Regional Magazine Association, this year held in Baltimore. Congrats to photographers Jeff Friesen for “The Moving Picture Show” Sept/Oct 2012; and Kate Barden and Bruce Cramer, for the opening photo in “Million Dollar Legs,” Jan/Feb 2012; and writer Mark Stevens, for “The Road to Burgeo,” July/Aug 2012. Well done, all.
