State of Jordan’s Birds

The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) is the Partner of BirdLife International in Jordan. RSCN works on bird conservation through research and the Important Bird Areas (IBAs) programme. Recently it has published a report on the State of Jordan’s Birds illustrating general information about birds of Jordan, such as pressures, responses and case studies. This report is nothing more than a humble endeavour by the authors to pay homage to the beautiful birds that, in one way or another, inhabit Jordan.
Picture of the Month
Common Name: False Cobra
Scientific Name: Malpolon moilesis

The False Cobra is, as the name suggest, not in fact a cobra but is able to imitate a cobra's stance by spreading its neck into a hood and hissing like the cobra. This species has a rarely leathal venom to humans. It has been seen in different locations in the southern parts of Jordan. It can grow up to 1.5 meters in length and preys on rodents and lizards.

Environmental Tips

Switch off lights during the day, and in rooms not being used. Wasted energy contributes in the change of the climate.
One of the RSCN Sponsorship Menu projects that you can support:

Bird Ringing at the Azraq Wetland Reserve (6,000 JOD)
Special rings are used for the bird ringing process. They come in different sizes to accommodate the various existing bird groups, differing based on the diameter of a bird’s tarsus. The tiny metal rings are marked with codes and serial numbers for identification and with the national address for the ringing scheme. Bird Ringing is one of the indicative conservation tools that contribute to the evaluation of the ecosystem status and the understating of birds’ migration globally.
The RSCN started a Bird Ringing Program in the Azraq Wetland Reserve several years ago, however, this program requires major development to reach international standards. This will include buying new rings and equipment and the use of specialized  experts.
