TWAK: This Week At King's. October 6th-October 12th, 2013.

THIS WEEK AT KING'S
October 6th-12th, 2013

TWAK can sometimes be confusing to people. Confusing on the same level as the why is Mel Gibson starring in Machete Kills type of confusion. So I thought this week, I’d go all b-boy on you and break it down. After all, I’m nothing more than a b-boy standing in my b-boy stance. TWAK stands for This Week at King’s, which some people have a hard time wrapping their heads around. I can slowly begin to see why this is, given that there are so many other things that TWAK stands for. Did you know that in the Afrikaan dictionary, TWAK means tobacco? Did you know that TWAK is a slang word for a really scary type of drug? That’s pretty much it. Those are the two other meanings and they were courtesy of Urban Dictionary (shout out to Urban Dictionary for the second time in this opening monologue this year). I hope this provided you with a little bit more insight behind the word TWAK. If I’ve learned one thing while researching the word TWAK’s history, it’s to always keep the SafeSearch on when searching the word TWAK in your search engine of choice. There’s some explicit stuff out there and it is not suitable for the web.

Sending you my warmest holiday greetings from the depths of the Killam,

H

HAVE A DAL EMAIL? THIS MESSAGE IS FOR YOU!
As you may or may not have noticed (those of you who haven’t noticed won’t be reading this email right now), Dal has switched over to Outlook as its email provider. This means if you were previously having your messages forward to a different email account from your Dal account, you must reset your forwarding options again. Tell all your friends because there’s probably been a whole bunch of important emails they’ve been missing. And missing out on a whole bunch of important emails really just isn’t fair, is it?

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

MONDAY, OCTOBER 7th

THE GREAT KSU UNION CARD GIVEAWAY VOL. 3: THE BEAT GOES ON
In front of Prince Hall, 10AM-4PM
HE’S BAAAAAAACK! @OpinionDavid returns for another fun day of producing KSU Union Cards, just pour you. What’s a KSU union card you ask? Well I can see you haven’t been reading TWAK closely enough for the past two weeks. I’ll go ahead and tell you anyways though… it’s your ISIC + your health plan card rolled into one. What fun!

TEA WITH THE LIBRARIAN
The Library, 4PM
After getting your union card, rush on over to the Library for tea with the Librarian. Man, how I’d like to be a fly on the wall during that tea time. You know what though, instead of going all Gregor Samsa
on you, I might as well just go to the library circulation desk, sign up and attend as a real life human being.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1st

KSU ELECTIONS: COUNCILLOR ELECTION SPEECHES
The Wardroom, 7PM
Come be entertained and hear what your candidates in the upcoming KSU Elections have the say. Then vote on Wednesday and Thursday in front of Prince Hall from 9AM-5PM. Woah, I just got light-headed and realized that I’ve been sitting in the Killam for over eight hours.

NOVA SCOTIA VOTES: ELECTION DAY
Polling stations in various locations, all day
It’s your last possibility to vote in the provincial election. Go all Ramada on us and do your thing.
Head on over to the Elections Nova Scotia website to find your polling station. After voting, head on down to the Wardroom and join us for…

NOVA SCOTIA VOTES: WARDROOM ELECTIONS RESULTS PARTY
The Wardroom, 8PM
You’ve met with the candidates, you’ve canvassed on the streets and you’ve broken down the party platforms. Now get together and celebrate all that’s been achieved in this election campaign. Come  cheer and boo the results. And also check out the Facebook event. There’s some creepy ass photo of people in the Wardroom on there.

SUSTAINABILTY KING’S MEETING
Manning Room, 8:30PM
Only came outside to watch the nightfall with the rain, I heard you making patterns rhyme, like some new romantic looking for the tv sound, you'll see I'm right some other time. The lyrics continue.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9th

KSU ELECTIONS: COUNCILLOR ELECTION DAY
In front of Prince Hall, 9AM-5PM
Exercise your democratic right as a King’s student and vote, vote, vote in the KSU Councillor Elections. Positions up for grabs include First Year Rep, Journalism Rep, Science Rep, Arts Rep, and Member at Large. Platforms can be read at the polling booth. For whatever reason, Microsoft Word is telling me I am spelling councillor wrong when I type it in lower case but says I am spelling it right when I spell it in all caps. Oh well, I guess I am just going to have to spell COUNCILLOR in caps from now on. You have just been witness to the birth of a running joke, you are part of e-newsletter history.

THE FUTURE OF THE STATUS QUO: THE LEFT AFTER THE N.S. ELECTION
Wilson Common Room, 7:30PM
The Platypus Affiliated Society at King's is hosting a fruitful (love that term) conversation about the left after this current Nova Scotia election. Panelists include Howard Epstein, Judy Haiven and Alex Khasnabish. You should be all topical and go. Because the N.S. election is all topical this week.  You should also be all topical and check the event out on Facebook
. What are you talking about Haydn, Facebook was invented back in 2004?

WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY
Middle Bay Don Suite, 9PM
The Chapel crew keeps on slugging through “The Gospel according to Matthew” in the style of Lectio Divina. Hopefully someone will be there to swipe me in.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10th

KSU ELECTIONS: COUNCILLOR ELECTION DAY
In front of Prince Hall, 9AM-5PM
Yet another chance to vote for COUNCILLORS in the KSU COUNCILLOR elections. The polls are open 9AM-5PM and COUNCILLOR candidate bios are posted at the polls. Screw this, I am getting tired of flexing my pinky to hit caps lock (aka CapsLK) so this COUNCILLOR running joke is over. You’ve just witnessed the death of a running joke. You are part of e-newsletter history.

KSU UNION CARD MAKING TIME
KSU Office, 1-4PM
Swing on by the KSU Office to pick up your Union Card, which includes your ISIC Discount Card and Health Plan Card. Chris Parsons is a fiend when it comes to making KSU Union Cards. JKLOLOMGBBQ I’VE NEVER SEEN HIM MAKE UNION CARDS BEFORE, BUT I’M SURE HE’S GREAT.

HOST SOCIETY MEETING
Senior Common Room (or the SCR for all of you affluent in acronyms), 6PM
I mean, you gotta love the folks down at the HOST Society. They are going to give you pizza, bring you up to speed (I swear, that’s a Beastie Boys lyric) on what they are going to be doing this year and bring in some HOST staff members to offer words of welcome. SPEAKING WORDS OF WELCOME, LET IT BE. Now I am just envisioning Gord McOuat belting out the Beatles.

KSU ELECTIONS: RESULTS TIME
The Wardroom, Night Time (, Here comes the)

There’s gonna be a plethora of ballots to count, so no one’s really sure when these get underway. Your best bet is staying in touch with the KSU Facebook and Twitter accounts for updates on what time to expect results. I will also be sending out a carrier pigeon to all 1,180 students who attend this institution.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12th

KING’S CHAPEL THANKSGIVING RETREAT
St. Anne’s Camp, runs to Monday, October 14th
Not going home for Thanksgiving? Join the folks from the King’s Chapel in the backwoods of Nova Scotia for food, fun, and fellowship... look at that use of alliteration! You can pick up a registration form at the back of the Chapel and you better go quickly because spaces are limited. For more information, contact my good friend Karis via email for more details. She’s got a great email address, it’s
singingcarrots@gmail.com.

KING’S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS COLLECTIVE MEETING
Senior Common Room, 1PM
There’s no better way to de-stress this long weekend than attending a KMHAC meeting in the SCR and eating some snacks and playing some board games and just chatting. In the words of Tina Turner, simply the best, better than all the rest.

BAKING WITH PATROL
Manning Room, 4:30PM (baking time), 6PM (eating time)
It’s Thanksgiving Weekend, and what says Thanksgiving more than gourds. Alright, well baking apple pie with Patrol comes a close second. Actually, if you ask me, baking apple pie with Patrol says America more than Thanksgiving, but maybe that’s just me. Baking starts at 4:30 as per usual with eating time to follow at 6PM AST. You are encouraged to bring whipped cream and ice cream. This entry has made me think of a very good name for a gourd stand: Gord’s Gourds.

UPCOMING EVENTS

KING’S CHAPEL FALL TERM RETREAT
Friday, October 25th-Sunday, October 27th, Keji Park

KSU NEWS

KSU ELECTION BREAKING NEWS UPDATE
Haydn will not be sending out a carrier pigeon to all 1,180 students to let them know what time election results start. He forgot that he only has a $100 Communications budget line to work with and that 1,180 carrier pigeons do not fit within this budget line. He tried to pull some strings and crunch numbers as he does have a history with carrier pigeons. In grade 1, he did a novel study on carrier pigeons and got to release one in front of his entire grade 1 class. He, however, could not get in touch with his carrier pigeon contact by press time. The King’s Students’ Union regrets the error.

NEW BOOKS
As a result of the Great Killam Library Reduced Hour Controversy of 2013, why don’t we just boycott the Killam and go exclusively to the King’s Library to read these great new acquisitions. These week, we’ve got a little bit of text on the heart and soul of America (go Tigers go!), some democratic fueled text for a democratic-fueled week and a f’n great new text on cusswords.

·         Detroit: an American Autopsy by Charlie LeDuff
·         How to Win an Election: an Ancient Guide for Modern Politicians by Quintus Tullius Cicero
·         Holy Shit: a Brief History of Swearing by Melissa Mohr

VITTLES GLORIOUS VITTLES: Your guide to free food & drink on campus

MONDAY: It’s a real treat when you get to eat and drink in the library. Trust me, I’ve been chastised for sneaking food into the cubicles downstairs. So in my books, Tea with the Librarian (The Library, 4PM), is a can’t miss opportunity.

TUESDAY: We’ve got our classic Tuesday vittles line-up ready to go for you. Coming in strong on forward and packing a punch with their tasty eats is The Loaded Laddle (Dal SUB lobby, 11:30AM). On quarterback is Saint Andrew’s United with their free University Student Suppers (Saint Andrew’s United Church, 5:30PM). Guys, after announcing that line-up, I’m basically John Madden Jr.

WEDNESDAY: Guess who’s back, back again? Laddle’s back, tell a friend (Dal SUB lobby, 11:30AM).  Bet you never thought there’d be a Marshall Bruce Mathers III reference in this column. Also the HOST Society is gonna give you PIZZA, P-I-Z-Z-A at their meeting (Senior Common Room, 6PM). Come ‘on Haydn, that’s reference again? Look, I love gremlin Mary-Kate and Ashley just as much as the next guy, but seriously?

THURSDAY: Seriously, free Laddle food again? How do these folks do it Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday after Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. I’m starting to suspect this is front for something. (Dal SUB lobby, 11:30AM).

SATURDAY: KMHAC will be serving up some snacks at their meeting (Senior Common Room, 1PM), alongside board games and dialogue. Baking with Patrol (Manning Room, 4:30PM) is celebrating Thanksgiving by baking some good ‘ol fashioned Apple Pie. Hopefully, it’s just like momma used to make it, but something’s telling me that’s not the case considering the event entry email that I received said that Patrol has no idea how to bake apple pie. #STILLGONNABEAGOODTIMENONETHELESSTHOUGH #THICKE

If you'd like to see your announcement in the next TWAK then make sure to send your event to cvp@ksu.ca by 11:59PM on October 12 2013. I love all of you who read the footer. I got to meet a whole bunch of you in the KSU Office this week when you were picking up your prizes. I will have more prizes for you dear footer readers, oh yes, I will. But for now, it's bedtime for Haydn.
