The Purrington Post roars to life!

Welcome to the first edition of Craig Street Cats’ electronic newsletter, The Purrington Post!

We’ll be emailing The Purrington Post once per month and hope you’ll enjoy learning more about upcoming events and volunteer opportunities, as well as getting to know more about cats and kittens that are available for adoption at the Adoption Centre and from our foster families.

Each edition will also include sections such as:
  • A “Foster Focus” which will introduce you to a foster family and the cats they are caring for.
  • Quick facts about one of our amazing Craig Street Cats volunteers.
  • Links to interesting articles about feral cat colony management or other rescue shelters in Canada.
  • A recap of the past month’s adoptions.
  • Info about how you can best help Craig Street Cats care for kittens and cats in Winnipeg.
We are eager to expand our list of Purrington Post subscribers, so please feel free to forward on your copy. Those wanting to subscribe can do so at this link: Craig Street Cats – Newsletter Subscription.

Foster Focus: Midnight & the Roller Derby Kittens

We are pleased to introduce you to Midnight and her 4 kittens, who are being lovingly cared for by a Craig Street Cats foster family.

Midnight and her kids: Sir Vesa (m); Porslayin Doll (f); Rosie(f); and Mickie(m), are named after skaters from the Winnipeg Roller Derby League. All five cats in this family are still waiting for their forever homes and are spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated. This family of cats are very well socialized and live with 2 dogs and 3 Guinea Pigs!

To view photos of this awesome cat family, visit Midnight & the Roller Derby Kittens

And follow Midnight and her kids on Facebook here

If you are interested in adopting Midnight or any of her kids, please call us at 204-421-1919 to arrange a meeting.

National Feral Cat Days

More than 60 people stopped by the Adoption Centre from October 18 to 20 and took part in our National Feral Cat Day celebrations.

Big thanks to all our volunteers who donated a massive amount of baking as well as some lovely silent auction prizes. And we must really thank our volunteers who spent time at the Adoption Centre running the BBQ, bake sale table, giving tours and getting the Centre in tiptop shape for all our guests. With the support of volunteers and those who attended, we were able to raise $1600!

We’d also like to thank everyone who participated in the feral cat shelter building workshop. We had 13 participants ranging in age from 14 to 65. In addition to there being lots of laughter, the group constructed 13 sturdy shelters that will be used to provide warmth and protection to cats living in Winnipeg’s feral colonies.

The shelters were made from foil-backed insulation sheets which were generously donated by Brock White Construction Materials and delivered by Lyle Dew Concrete Construction.

Photos of the shelter workshop can be viewed here.

Photos of the BBQ and Bake Sale can be viewed here.

A note from Lynne Scott, Executive Director

Cat licensing: Is it good for cats?

City Council recently passed a new by-law that is supposed to encourage Winnipeggers to be responsible pet owners.

The by-law includes some good things, like a change in the way pet limits are applied. You can now have a maximum of 6 cats and / or dogs, with no more than 4 being dogs. So, cat lovers can have 6 cats without running afoul of the by-law.

Unfortunately, the new by-law also includes some very bad news for cat owners.

Read more about Winnipeg's new Responsible Pet Ownership by-law and what it means for you and your cats, here.

Craig Street Cats - Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteers are the backbone of Craig Street Cats and we love them dearly!

We are thrilled to introduce to you Erica I., who has been volunteering with Craig Street Cats since spring of 2013. She learned about volunteering with Craig Street Cats via a radio broadcast. Here's some Q & A with Erica:

Q. What sort of volunteering do you do with Craig Street Cats?
A. I volunteer every Wednesday night and do cleaning tasks like sanitizing the litter boxes that have been changed out, cleaning scoops, kennels, and any other heavy cleaning that needs doing. These are the tasks that the daytime staff and volunteers don't have time to get to because they are caring for the cats.

Q. What's the best part of volunteering with Craig Street Cats?
A. I get a great sense of accomplishment from helping an organization that really needs help to keep going.

Q. How many cats do you have at home and what are their names?
A. I have two cats: Ripley and Penny. And my roommate has one cat, Wicket.

If you are interested in volunteering at Craig Street Cats, we'd love to hear from you! We need all types of volunteers and you can commit to regular shifts or volunteer as your schedule permits. Submit your application online today by heading to Craig Street Cats - Volunteers.

Name the kitten contest!

We just rescued some very small and fluffy white kittens with help from one of our colony managers! These sweeties are so purrfect that we want them to have the most original names possible.

To help cover the costs of caring for these wee kittens, we are holding a "Kitten Naming Contest." We are inviting our supporters to help us name one of the kittens by making a $5 donation and submitting a name of their choice.

Phase One: Name Submissions

Names may be submitted in two ways:

1. Follow the link at the bottom of this article and make a $5 donation to Craig Street Cats. Please enter the kitten name in the note box you will see after you have entered your card information.

2. At the Craig Street Cats adoption centre (489 Madison). When you make a $5 donation you will be asked to print the name you want to submit on a paper collar which will be attached to a contest board.

Name submissions will be accepted until November 5th. You can enter as many names as you like but there is one name submission per $5.00 donation.

Phase Two: Voting
Voting will take place between November 6th and 12th. Votes may be made in 2 ways:

1. By clicking on a link and making a $5 donation to Craig Street Cats. Please check www.craigstcats.ca on November 6th for the voting link. We will also post the link on our Facebook page.

2. Vote in person at the Craig Street Cats adoption centre (489 Madison), by making a $5 donation.

You may vote as many times as you like, but each vote will require a $5 donation.
