The Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i (FLH) is pleased to announce its November Booksale to be held over the Veterans’ Day Weekend,  November 9, 10, and 11, 2013 at the Harbor Warehouse location. FLH thanks the Hawai‘i State Federal Credit Union (HSFCU) for their title sponsorship of this booksale. Over 50 categories of books will be offered at this sale. Specials include art books, donated by Robyn Buntin of Honolulu, sea shell books from the estate of a collector, comics/manga, and a variety of book store furniture.

Booksale inventory will be restocked throughout the sale, so please plan on spending all three days with us! Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

HSPLSʻ Mobile Netbook Loan Program Set to Launch

This program will provide patrons with an HSPLS library card the opportunity to check out a netbook computer for 3-week loan periods. The netbooks will allow patrons to connect to the internet and provide Microsoft Office software including Word and Excel to assist them with creating documents and spreadsheets, and to take advantage of the Microsoft IT Academy courses offered at the HSPLS website.

Library staff will provide one-on-one or group training on basic introductory and digital literacy information regarding use of the netbooks.

In August, HSPLS successfully tested a pilot netbook loan program at the Kāne‘ohe, ‘Ewa Beach, and Wahiawā branches. HSPLS plans to implement the program statewide at 37 libraries later this year. The netbooks were funded by the Federal Library Services and Technology ACT (LSTA), which is administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) with a Library Services & Technology Act grant.

20th Anniversary of Links raised over $100,00 for HSPLS

The 20th Annual Links to Literacy golf tournament took place on Friday, September 13, 2013 at Ko Olina Golf Club. The tournament was followed by a sumptuous banquet at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa. Thanks to our generous sponsors and donors, the tournament and silent auction at the banquet netted over $100,000 for Hawai‘iʻs public libraries.

For the first time in 20 years, the day started out wet with a blessing of rain at Ko Olina. The rain stopped and the skies cleared in time for the 11:30  a.m. shot gun start. After a fun day on the course, players headed to the banquet to enjoy the prime rib and place bids on the nearly 200 silent auction items donated by generous Hawai‘i, mainland, and international business supporters. The ceremony included proclamations honoring Links Tournament Chair Alan Y. Yamamoto from Hawai‘iʻs U.S. Congressional representatives, Governor Abercrombie, and Mayor Caldwell who proclaimed September 13, 2013 as “Alan Y. Yamamoto Day in the City & County of Honolulu.” Thanks to Mr. Yamamotoʻs guidance, the tournament has raised $2.5 million for Hawai‘iʻs public libraries over the last 20 years.

Ali‘i Place Bookstore at Hawai‘i State FCU - Coming Soon!

FLH is very pleased to announce our continued partnership with the Hawai‘i State Federal Credit Union, soon to open a second bookstore location at the Ali‘i Place HSFCU Branch downtown, building on the success of the store at the Halekauwila HSFCU Branch. We expect to open this second bookstore in late November or early December.

Similar to the Halekauwila HSFCU Branch Bookstore, Ali‘i Place will include bookshelves stocked with a variety of popular titles. We are grateful to community partners like Hawai‘i State FCU and the donation of lobby space that allows FLH to expand its year-round booksales and reach more people in the community. Find out more at the FLH website.
