HIGHLIGHT
We’re trying to make sure that a longer life is not an emasculated one for young men with DMD
Boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy typically died as teenagers, but now live much longer. Unique research, led by David Abbott from Bristol University’s School for Policy Studies, asks how social care, through greater gender sensitivity, can make more of their unplanned-for longevity. There were repeated examples of these men feeling emasculated by the support they were getting, and the research aims to find out more about these young men’s interactions with social care professionals and how their gender can be supported.
