It's November 2013, so it's the perfect time to
work on paraglider control (there are none of those pesky thermals
around to lure us away from the hill). So in the newsletter we look at
the crosswind launch and nudge you in the direction of studying some
useful theory.

FLYBABBLE
What do we really know about autumn in the UK? Half the team
skedaddled off to South Africa, the other half went to Spain, leaving
poor old Simon (err, half and a half has made a hole) to glare out the
window at the wind.
Whazzat? An album of photos
on Facebook reveals there was a flagrant disregard for such myths.
People were committing aviation, in perfect weather! 81 counts of
levitation in 81 seperate incidents, all within spitting distance of
the A27 and in full view of the (wistful) public.
I suppose that means Flybubble will be training every flyable day
throughout the winter? You betcha! These mellow days of steady soaring
are worth grabbing with both hands. (Here's your link for your pair of heated glove liners.)

Another Successful Spain Trip
In short, it was a fantastic trip with mostly fabulous weather and a great bunch of people!
We
flew almost every day of the two weeks and our pilots got shed loads of
top quality airtime. They had many flights over 2 hours (a few over 4)
with oodles of great thermaling, and some short-to-medium distance XCs
(10 to 40km).
Most of the time it was sunny blue skies with
daytime temperatures around 25-30C; just perfect! We lost a couple of
days due to bad weather (mainly too windy, but also some rain) and had
a few cloudy but flyable days - and even those produced some great
flying.
Many personal bests were beaten by pilots in our group,
and some dreams realised and goals achieved! Due to the beautiful sunny
weather we enjoyed for most of the trip we have LOADS of great photos
and video footage!

Control: Crosswind launching
When the wind runs across the launch slope it can become difficult to control the wing.

The Good Stuff - study material
For new paragliding pilots, we recommend you start with the Paragliding Essential Starter Pack.
We
recently attended an SIV course and it rocked our boat (again)! It's an
essential experience for any pilot wanting to progress with confidence.
Get Jocky Sanderson's DVD Security in Flight II and be thrilled. |

On the subject of studying, here's a new edition in an excellent video series (following on from Advanced Ground Handling, Advanced Launching, and Inflight Precision).
|
Although aimed at powered paragliding pilots, the techniques in Advanced Landing
are relevant because they mostly deal with engine-out landings. With
25kg on your back you need every bit of talent and technique to get
safe spot landings! |
If you're wanting to improve your flying, what could be better than Bruce Goldsmith's new book 50 ways to fly better?
It is packed with the latest techniques and thinking from some of the world's best pilots and instructors.
"Essential reading for anyone wanting to fly to their best potential," says Chrigel Maurer. |

In Cross Country Flying,
Burkhard Martens reveals his personal tricks and presents tips for
successful flying gathered from years of cross country flying. Also
consider his first book Thermal Flying. |

Greg enjoys some Southern Hemisphere flying
We're stocked up. Are you?
We've stocked up with all kinds of flying things, so you don't have to wait in the gloom, watching reruns of Das Boot: DVDs, books, instruments that play the sound of summer, flying clothing to keep you warm and the latest harnesses to hang around in (in front of the fire?). It's all here, waiting for Santa's reindeer.
If it's going to be winter, it might as well be fun!
Keep the dream alive,
Carlo, Nancy, Greg & Simon
