After School Program
SCM has 52 children on role this year - more than ever before. "We felt the need to open more slots to help some of the kids that are really below their grade level," says Justina Dix, ministry director. With this increased enrollment, Justina and the SCM staff also have hope that extra volunteer help will come this year. Many of the kids need one on one tutoring and individual attention to accomplish daily goals.
Justina has met with several of the elementary school teachers identifying children that need extra encouragement in academics. “We appreciate the support of our teachers” says Justina. “Several of the elementary and middle school teachers have committed themselves to visit our after school program at least twice a month, to check on our students, and remind them that we, the SCM staff and the local teachers, are working together for their success.
We cherish our returning volunteers and are excited about our new volunteers that have joined the team.
We need and welcome more help in our K-2nd class, Monday through Thursday. Please contact Justina if you have an interest.
Flag Football
Coached by Will Mott, Ryan Springfield and Justin Dix, these 14 young energetic group of boys are enjoying their time on the football field. They are improving on the fundamental skills of football while learning how to respect each other. The team also won the flag football championship. Congratulations!
Praise - Grant Awarded
After submitting a detailed application, speaking to over 100 women, hosting two site visits and much praying, SCM was awarded a $50,000 grant from One Hundred Shares on October 24th! Justina was supported by several of her staff and two board members at the special awards luncheon. The grant funds specifically target renovating our teen room and creating a new technology learning center. It also provides the funds to launch our "Youth Moving Forward" program in February and June of 2014. This program is geared towards our teens who are struggling with drugs, sex and gangs. More details to come.

Prayer Requests
-
Please pray for SCM children and families as we enter the holidays. It will be a trying time for some. This is the time when parents seem to fight over who will have the children for the holiday. Children will often be left unattended during school breaks, and some families will suffer hardships.
-
Pray that the Dix family will be back in their home for the holidays.
-
Pray for the staff and volunteers as we work to meet the needs of the children in our programs, and that we will learn more about the Wonderful Supplier of all needs - our Heavenly Father.
Thanksgiving
We will have our Thanksgiving dinner for the kids on Thursday, November 21st.
Thank you Desire Street Ministries for every prayer and offer of support that you have given on behalf of the the SCM ministry, staff, and the Dix family. We are also grateful to God for Danny Wurfell, who commits personal time to care for the partners of DSM. Our hearts have been touched in a way that we will not soon forget.

Summerhill Christmas Sponsorship
The children at the After School Program have been learning about giving to others. The two greatest commandments are "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind", and "Love your neighbor as yourself." There are so many ways to accomplish the meaning of these scriptures and it is exciting to see how the children get to live out what they have been learning, through SCM’s Christmas program. Each child has made a list of two gifts they would like to receive for themselves, and one gift they would like to give to someone else.
As we approach our “wrapping party” on Thursday, December 20th, the kids will be doing extra chores around the house, at school, and throughout the community in order to earn “Christmas bucks.” An adult will sign a form to show that the child has completed a task, and then those Christmas bucks will be exchanged for the gift they want to give to a loved one. They will also be able to purchase a second gift from our Christmas store with their Christmas bucks. At the wrapping party, the kids will wrap these two gifts. It is encouraging to see a group of young people excited about serving and giving to others during a season in which they are generally focused on themselves.
We would love to have your help! If you choose to sponsor a child, you will receive a card written by one of the children with three gift wishes. We ask that you purchase the gifts and turn them in to a SCM representative by Tuesday, December 17th. Wrap only the gifts going to the child. Please put the gifts in a bag with the child’s name on it. If you do not have time to shop, feel free to send a donation to cover the cost of the gifts for a child. Remember that all donations are tax deductible.
