The SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County, Inc. is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We do not operate the county shelter. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues, and fundraising events.

People and Pets Strut Their Stuff at PawZen

We jump started the holiday at the Bones n' Pawz Doggie Fashion Show and Expo on December 7th, with proceeds and donations benefiting the SPCA/HS. Held at PawZen Pet Store & Spa in Hyattsville, the event included a fashion show featuring the latest trends and designs in doggie apparel and accessories, a marketplace, and silent auction. A big thank you to Sandra Navarra and Faith Weiner for coordinating our participation, and our fabulous volunteers who staffed the event.
MISSION CRITICAL

Spay/Neuter Saves Lives

This unusual Sphynx cat was one of the 55 animals we altered at the November 23rd/24th spay/neuter event, most of which were done at no cost for qualifying low-income families.

One of the most critical elements of the SPCA/HS mission is spay/neuter. Primarily focused on helping families with limited resources, our spay/neuter weekend events serve between 25-30 animals each day. The majority of surgeries are done at no cost to pet owners, thanks to generous donations to our group made by individuals and from the Snyder Foundation.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates that 6-8 million homeless animals enter animal shelters every year, nearly half of which are euthanized. "These are not the offspring of homeless 'street' animals—these are the puppies and kittens of cherished family pets and even purebreds. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100 percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats."

Combating Black Friday Burnout at the Alternative Gift Fair

The concept: Instead of giving your brother another sweater, you can make a donation in his name to a charitable cause that he is passionate about.

How it works: Shoppers make donations to charities, supporting a specific service or item to help communities and environments in need. All gifts are tax-deductible and include a certificate to drop into a holiday card.

The SPCA/HS participated in the 5th Annual Takoma Park Alternative Gift Fair, held on December 7th. In a season when consumerism often dominates, events like these can be a breath of fresh air for attendees and volunteers.
