A Letter from the Organizational Formation Committee
Dear Conference Participants and Other Friends of the International Herbert Marcuse Society,
In order to promote the mission and enhance the impact of the Marcuse Society and to enable tax-deductible contributions from individuals, foundations, and others for the development of funding in support of the Society’s conferences and projects, the formal organization of the Society as a nonprofit organization has been proposed. Discussions have been underway since the organizational meeting at the conclusion of the Society’s conference in Philadelphia in 2011. Informed by these discussions, the research that followed, and the enthusiasm expressed by those in the Society to date regarding this proposal, several folks who have been involved with the Society since its founding are now ready to propose and undertake the formalization of the Society as a nonprofit organization. To that end, we have developed organizational documents of the sort that have been adopted by other similar academic societies who have recently formally organized as nonprofit organizations (e.g., Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy).
We would be pleased to receive comments and suggestions regarding the general idea of the nonprofit organization of the Society and, more specifically, about any and all provisions in the draft Bylaws. To that end, a draft version of the Bylaws has been placed on the website of the Society:
At the Society’s upcoming conference at the University of Kentucky, specifically at its business meeting on Friday, November 8, 2013, at 11:45 a.m., the organizational documents will be formally introduced to all in attendance. A membership table will be staffed at the conference, and, of course, everyone interested in supporting the mission of the Society is enthusiastically welcomed as a member of the Society! At this business meeting, a vote is planned to install a President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, and additional Directors of the Board of Directors, as set forth in the organizational documents. If you are interested in having your name placed on the slate of candidates, please send an email (indicating the position you are seeking) by 6 p.m. (EST) Wednesday, November 13, 2013 to Andy Lamas at: ATLamas@sas.upenn.edu
Thank you.
