GDAE contributes to Building a Green Economy

Jonathan Harris, Director of GDAE’s Theory and Education Program, recently contributed a chapter on Green Keynesianism to the book Building a Green Economy: Perspectives from Ecological Economics. This new book presents a roadmap for an economy that prioritizes human welfare over consumerism and growth. Dr. Harris’ chapter addresses tensions between traditional Keynesianism and growth limits, and proposes an approach using Keynesian policy to promote the transition to a green economy.

Leontief Prize to Deaton and Galbraith

GDAE will award its 2014 Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought to Angus Deaton and James K. Galbraith. This year's award, titled “Inequality and Well-Being in an Age of Instability,” recognizes the contributions that these researchers have made to the studies of poverty, inequality, and well-being. They have both played a critical role in bringing grounded empirical analysis to bear on topics in need of applied interdisciplinary research. A ceremony will be held at Tufts University on April 4, 2014; details will be announced next month.

GDAE explores Local Sustainable Economies

GDAE Research Fellow Anne-Marie Codur presented her research on The Emergence of Local Sustainable Economies: Stories of Resilience, Renewal and Rebirth. She explored various examples of the re-localization of the economy, including sustainable management of local ecosystems and natural resources, more equitable forms of economic enterprises such as cooperatives, and re-invention of money through local currencies.

Social Science Library distributed to 50 countries

The Social Science Library (SSL) Project continues distributing much-needed, high quality scholarly works in seven social sciences. These materials are sent for free, on USB drives, DVDs, and CDs, to universities and libraries in 138 countries characterized by low incomes and poor Internet connectivity. As of November 2013, these resources have reached over 1,300 entities across 50 countries. The project is seeking Distribution Partners in about 90 countries.

The mission of GDAE's Theory and Education Program is to advance the theory, teaching and application of an economic understanding which will serve the essential goals of humanity-goals that must include the fostering of equitable societies in sustainable ecological surroundings.
