This is my last week in town as I embark on Friday for my first tour of Europe with my trio. I'm pretty excited and will be traveling to some fantastic places including Paris, Padova, Barcelona & Madrid and a few other cities in-between. I'm taking Paul Gill and Yotam Silberstein with me. This will actually be the longest period of time I've been away from Smalls in about 6 years. Of course I'll be worried about the club but I feel assured that it is in the good hands of Mitch Borden, Spencer Murphy, Nick Hempton, John Merrill, Erin Short and the rest of my fantastic Smalls staff. I'll try to update via these newsletters but there's no telling if I'll have time or not. Anyway, wish me luck and please enjoy the next few weeks at Smalls. We got nothing but good music coming up.
This Week At Smalls:
Monday: Our first trio of the week is my old classmate from the New School, Jill McCarron with Greg Ryan on bass and Joe Strasser on drums. Jill is a graceful pianist and wonderful composer. If you haven't had a chance to hear her I urge you to come out. At 10PM is trumpeter Diego Urcola celebrating the release of his new CD project "Mates". With him is an extraordinary band featuring Dave Samuels on vibes, Raul Jaurena on bandoneon, the truly amazing Edmar Casteneda on harp (yes, harp) and Luques Curtis on bass. This will be a rare and exciting evening of music.
Tuesday: I feature my trio with Yotam Sileberstein & Paul Gill from 7:30 PM to 10PM. At 10:30 (or so) we have the Smalls Legacy Band coming in to do their show. Featuring Josh Evans, Stacy Dillard, Theo Hill and the force-of-nature Frank Lacy.
Wed & Thur: I'm psyched to present a two nighter of one of the best "younger" trios playing. Led by the inventive drummer Colin Stranahan and featuring the rising star on piano Glen Zaleski and Rick Rosato on bass. This is a trio to watch out for. Our "Round Midnight" set on Wednesday featuring Roberto Gatto and his excellent quartet with Michael Blake on tenor, Nir Felder on guitar and Matt Clohesy on bass. Thursday late show is one of our most dependable groups led by Carlos Abadie and his quintet.
Fri & Sat: For our 7:30 PM shows we present two different veterans of the music. On Friday is the wonderful Gary Dial and his trio with Steve LaSpina on bass and Richie DeRosa on bass. Gary has been a force on the jazz education scene and is not heard to often. On Saturday for the 7:30 PM show is the great Mel Martin on tenor sax and his quartet with Vic Juris on guitar, Ratzo Harris on bass and Steve Johns playing drums. Our 10:30 PM show both nights features the fiery tenor playing of Walt Weiskopf and his quartet with the great Peter Zak on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Jason Brown playing drums. Afterhours on Saturday stick around to check out the soulful Ian Hendrickson-Smith and his groovy group.
Sunday: We feature an amazing vocalist Barbara Rosene who is coming in with the wonderful Conal Fowkes on piano. Conal is the pianist for the current Woody Allen film and plays marvelously. The "Round Midnight" show on Sunday showcases bass player Reid Taylor doing a tribute to his mentor Butch Warren and features Dan Blankinship, Ned Goold, Sacha Perry & Charles Goold.
