Voicewalks officially launched!

On Saturday 12 October 2013, Hearing the Voice joined forces with Stepaway Magazine to celebrate the launch of Voicewalks at the Durham Book Festival.

A special edition of StepAway Magazine, edited by Darren Richard Carlaw and Angela Woods, Voicewalks is dedicated to the creative exploration of inner speech and voice-hearing experiences within the context of walking in the city.  Contributors were asked to ‘consider how they experience voices in their minds, how voices help or hinder the navigation of familiar and unfamiliar urban spaces, and what it feels like to ‘see and be seen’ when hearing voices.’  The result is a collection of walking narratives by voice-hearers and those who creatively imagine hearing voices, which challenges the stigma associated with this experience and celebrates the connections between voice-hearing and creativity.

One of the highlights of the magazine is the short story ‘Scoring Silence’, a specially commissioned piece by Iain Sinclair, the acclaimed author of American Smoke and pioneer of British psychogeography.  Other contributors include: Gill McEvoy, Roz Oates, Pippa Anais Gaubert, Liz Cookman, Martyn Halsall, Adam Steiner, Carole Glasser Langille, Rebecca Chamaa, Ed Attlee & Hannah Gregory.

The Voicewalks launch took place in St Chad’s College Chapel, Durham University, where Iain Sinclair was in conversation the co-director of Hearing the Voice, Dr Angela Woods, and Adam Steiner, Martyn Halsall, and HtV’s Roz Oates read their contributions to the collection.  To read a recent review of the event by Research in English at Durham, please click here.

An electronic version of Voicewalks is available for download here.  If you would like to obtain print copies of the magazine, please contact Hearing the Voice.  Please send us your mailing address with information about how many copies you would like.  There is no charge, and delivery will be an estimated 2-3 weeks. We can arrange for multiple copies to be sent for distribution amongst Hearing Voices Groups and other service user organisations.

StepAway Magazine is an established online literary magazine that aims to encourage all writers to walk in the city and record what they see, hear and feel. Writers record these observations in poetry, prose and non-fiction.

Hearing the Voice is a Wellcome Trust funded, interdisciplinary project led by researchers at Durham University. The project aims to help better understand the phenomenon of hearing a voice no one else can hear, its cognitive-neuroscientific mechanisms, its social, cultural and historical significance, and its therapeutic management.
