Youth Unemployment Futures
Born Free or Free Fall?
South Africa 2030
An excerpt from FLUX TREND’s 2030 YOUTH REPORT
In response to a growing social crisis in South Africa revolving around the challenges facing the youth generation, Flux Trends has compiled a ground-breaking report into the cause and effect of the forgotten “born-frees”, and the repercussions that this neglected generation will have on South African society over the next two decades, as they grow up and enter society, and (against all odds) our workforce. In the report, Flux Trends unpacks the root causes of our social problems, what we can expect as these traumatised children come of age, but more importantly, what they propose that we can do now to break the vicious cycle.
“They appear to be rebels without a cause, apathetic towards voting and politics, despite their parent’s sacrifice”
“Three out of four white children finish school, compared to only one in three black learners.”
“…at least one in five of teens think of harming themselves.”

Youth -- beyond “Unemployment”
by Irma Wilson - Founder: FutureSharp
When will we re-examine the concept of ‘job’ vs ‘work’? If everybody were to be ‘employed’ as the definition of it stands today, it’s a dire outlook for Africa with her massively youth skewed population. Place this in the context of the finite resources on our Planet and the extractive nature of our current economies, further exacerbated in the African context, with our resources being exported to other places on the planet that are using theirs up too fast. One word for you here: China.

The young people of Africa can be part of the solution
In Davos during the World Economic Forum this year, youth unemployment was described as a social and economic time bomb. And indeed it is. Over a quarter of the planet’s young people are neither studying nor working. But there is hope: There is a big opportunity with the use of new technologies and passion. New projects driven by these two factors can help create meaningful work and change lives for the better. For many young people, there is the hope of bringing a new idea to the table and see it come to fruition. They are the entrepreneurs that believe in using the Internet and other new technologies to create opportunities for fellow human beings, including the young.
