Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Resiliency Center table at Ambler’s Octoberfest. It was a lovely summer day in October, and we were thrilled to meet so many new people, see familiar faces, and award a raffle winner at the end of the day.

We are also grateful that so many of you have been participating in and enjoying the free resiliency programs this Fall. As a community of practitioners, it has been a fun opportunity to share our favorite tools and insights for greater health, happiness, and peace. There are more free offerings listed below so please continue to join us!

What is Integrative Medicine?

by Georgia Tetlow, MD, Philadelphia Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine is an approach that puts you at the center and addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect your health. This health strategy considers your unique conditions, needs and circumstances, and uses the most appropriate interventions from an array of scientific disciplines to heal illness and disease to help you regain and maintain optimum wellness.

Prevention

Many people think of prevention in terms of early detection, such as prostate cancer screening and breast examinations. Within integrative medicine, prevention means participating in behaviors and actions that foster health and wellness. This includes eating healthy, breathing clean air, drinking pure water, exercising on a regular basis, eliminating toxins from one’s home and work environments, and taking steps to reduce daily stress levels (I saved one of the most important for last!).

The importance of prevention lies in the fact that the majority of our health care dollars are currently spent after we are in crisis, when it costs the most to intervene and when the possibilities for full recovery are the slimmest. (1) Chronic conditions — asthma, heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, hypertension, stroke and obesity — account for more than half of all health care costs and more than 70% of deaths. Yet many chronic conditions are largely preventable and even reversible by making positive changes in personal behaviors.

Awake in the circle

By Elizabeth Venart, Resiliency Center Director

Awake
in this circle of souls unfolding,
I gaze skyward to stars and spirits,
honoring the travelers before me
and those yet to join us
on the journey.

Moving
in embrace of the Beloved,
humming,
like bees
making honey,
becoming the honey.
We are Sweetness itself,
Pouring Love
from every pore.

From this place of Love,
I remember.
A frozen moment,
Sitting.
Silence bringing pain, not ease.
Sisyphus and the boulder, struggling.

Resiliency through Play

For parents of preschool and elementary children

Wednesday, 11/6, 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Join Kathleen Krol, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist for this fun and interactive workshop to help parents understand “the meaning behind your child’s play.” Children’s natural language is play; it is how they express themselves, how they communicate, and how they learn. Kathy will discuss why play is so important to children’s development, and she will teach simple activities that you can do at home to help your child feel heard and supported, find solutions to problems, and communicate more effectively.

Contact Kathy directly at kasiakrol@aol.com with "workshop" in the subject line or RSVP online.

Resiliency through Meditation and QiGong

Wednesday, 11/20, 6:30-8:00 pm

Join Dean Solon and Karen Steinbrecher for this evening of stillness and gentle movement. Dean will lead you in an experience of the stillness of sitting meditation, and Karen Steinbrecher will guide you to experience presence in your body through the flowing and gentle movements of Qigong. Practice with us, experiencing acceptance without judgment, in that special, peaceful place within.  From stillness, we ease through movement; with movement, we return to stillness, connecting with the energy that is you.

Quotes of the Month

“When I come to the end of the light that I have known and step forward into the darkness, my faith assures me that my foot will find solid ground or I will fly”

“There is a power for Good in the Universe greater than I am and I can use it. There is a power for Good in the Universe greater than I am and it can use me. This Power, my Power is Love”
