Tufts Office of Sustainability newsletter, Vol. 4 No. 6
Dear Friend,

November is here, which means we've made it through our busiest month at the Office of Sustainability. From Zero Waste Week to Food Week, there was never a lull in green activity on campus this October. With Halloween behind us, we're left to clean up the remnants of our celebration as we make room for the next big Fall holiday, Thanksgiving. In the meantime you might be wondering the most ecological way to clean up from Halloween.

pumpkinDid you know that there were 47,800 acres of pumpkins harvested last year for Halloween? If you are looking for a way to get rid of your pumpkin, you should know that pumpkins make excellent compost! Ask your Eco-Rep where the nearest bin is, or check the Tufts Eco-Map for compost stations.

Read on for our recap of last month's Dairy Day at Dining, highlights from the weekly Eco-Rep blog, news from our Twitter feed, and the usual event and job listings. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for daily updates - and you are always welcome to visit us in Miller Hall or send us a message at sustainabilityoffice@tufts.edu.

Stay mindful,

Sofie Seiden, Communications Intern
Tufts Office of Sustainability

Food Week Recap: Dairy Day at Tufts Dining

Tufts Celebrates Food Day with Dairy-themed Dinner

October 24 was Food Day, a nationwide celebration for healthy, affordable and sustainable food. Tufts Dining and the Office of Sustainability teamed up once again to put together an educational, interactive dinner, and this year the theme centered around dairy.

The event took place at both Carmichael and Dewick-Macphie Dining Halls. Scattered generously across the dining halls were signs containing information on dairy production, dairy products, and the dairy industry. Read more>>

What I Learned from Planning Dairy Day

Sofie Seiden, our Communications Intern, did a lot of research on dairy - its consumption, production, and the environmental and political issues related to it - when she was co-planning the event with Tufts Dining. Not everything made it into the info signs featured at Dairy Day, so read about what she found out in her complete blog post about this staple in our diet.>>

Apart from planning fun activities to promote sustainable behaviors on campus, the Tufts Eco-Reps like to blog about their endeavors.

The View from Blakeley Hall

Blakeley Hall, according to its Eco-RepAndrew writes about what it is like to be the Eco-Rep for Blakeley Hall, the Fletcher School’s graduate student dormitory. "First, some background: Blakeley was built in 1926, in a Georgian style of architecture. It has three wings set around a courtyard, with seven independent towers of rooms. The middle tower houses Blakeley’s common room and kitchen, which serves as the busiest gathering space for residents, and the source of delicious smells when students cook dinner or prepare baked goods as a method of procrastination during exam periods… Read more>>
