Please come out and support CRHS at Town Council meeting, Tuesday October 22, 7:20pm(ish). 100 N. Wilcox St.  Please write an email of support or show up to speak briefly encouraging the town to fully fund CRHS's 2014 grant request. CRHS asks the Town to increase funding from the Philip S. Miller Fund to cover the salary of the Director. Read the grant application, and the supplemental materials. Please send email now.  Here is the agenda, we might be earlier or later depending upon how things move.

You are invited to join us for the next Historical Presentation: Dusk Tour of Cedar Hill Cemetery
An invitation to reflect and remember. We'll walk leisurely for about 40 minutes stopping at select gravesites to hear brief stories of the deceased. Refreshments served afterwards. Walking tour conducted by Castle Rock Historical Society members and family genealogists Jerry and Mary Persall with new material if you've been before! The Cedar Hill Cemetery was founded in 1875. Cedar Hill is the only cemetery in castle Rock, and contains the remains of pioneers significant in the early history of castle Rock and Douglas County. In addition to being the resting place of early pioneers, the historic section of the cemetery contains numerous unique stones and markers that represent the culture and lifestyles of various Douglas County families. The tour starts and ends on time and is geared for adults only. Cedar Hill Cemetery info. Please join us at 5:00 pm.Refreshments at by The Cakery.
 

News

Museum ReportDenver Museum of Nature and Science Fossils on loan
  • 143 Visitors last month, including visitors from 14 states
  • Successfully completed window and door projects
  • Walking & Biking tours – final tour enjoyed a good crowd again
  • October 5th hosted a model railroad system in the Museum’s garden, courtesy of the Denver Garden Railroad Society. Excellent visitor turnout.
  • Briefed Town Council on 3rd Quarter
  • Working with Arapahoe Community College architecture student regarding creating a model of the Conservation Corps Camp east of town. Toured the original site with the student.
  • Received a great donation of children’s antique toys.
  • County Fair booth Sat 10 Aug.
  • Exhibit on railroad watches and the accident which caused the railroads to institute time standards.
  • Took 500 flyers to Chamber of Commerce for relocation packages.

Society Report
  • Alexander MOB DisplayThe September Historical Presentation featured Nancy Sotomayor's presentation "Important documents of Douglas County". This fascinating presentation showcased historic maps, deed recordings, and the "poor book", a precursor to today's social safety net services. We learned about the project they undertook to restore the documents. The documents are public property, so stop by the Clerk's office to see them! 
  • Historic walking and biking tours at 10:30 am on the fourth Saturday concluded in September. Thanks to Maria Lunn for the photos. Please join us next year for the walking and biking tours in June, July, August and September.
  • The CRHS monthly Board meeting is open to the public. Join us 6:00-8:00 pm on November 21 at Bonaventure coffee shop.  Meeting minutes on the web site
  • CRHS is quoted by the Denver Post regarding the Continental Divide raceway.
