Managing jet lag

Last month I went from Australia to Europe for 10 days (including flight time) and used Melatonin and bright light, as discussed in this newsletter, to manage jet lag.

The system worked well - I had little jet lag and no need for 'naps'. I will certainly use this method again with long haul flights.
The use of Melatonin and bright light has been shown to help some people adjust more quickly to changes in time zone.

I had to write a prescription for Melatonin (2 mg) as you can't buy it ‘over the counter’.  I used 1/2 tablet on arrival if I woke after midnight in Europe (which I did). I took 1 tablet each evening when I returned to Australia.

Remember, on average your body clock takes approximately one day to calibrate an hour’s time difference - slightly longer for eastward travel. Therefore, some people take up to 8 days to naturally adjust to an 8-hour change in time zones.

Interestingly, travelling to the east is harder to adjust to than travelling west for physiological reasons. That's why increased levels of Melatonin are suggested when travelling eastward.  Read our guidelines for using Melatonin.

Benefits of corporate health programs

Healthy people are productive people. Workplace health programs are proven to improve productivity, to reduce absenteeism and to decrease workers compensation costs.

Clients comments

"I recently undertook a health assessment with Dr. Cummins. I am aged 65 and keep in good health. My problem is more related to “overdoing it”. After I failed the stress test the first time, I had some further cardio checks and a follow up stress test.

The further test has given me clear targets and boundaries for my health activities to keep me both fit and healthy but also safe.

I appreciated the care when my condition was first diagnosed. My safety was the only focus. The follow up and later testing was both thorough, caring and complete.

I feel confident that I can now maintain my health within safe boundaries and have a history at my “general health doctor" at Executive Health to keep a watchful eye over my future wellbeing."

Adrian is moving on

Adrian Paraska, our much loved and valued Exercise Physiologist, has accepted a new position at Westmead Children’s Hospital in the Cardiac Physiology Unit. This is very much our loss and their gain – and an excellent opportunity for Adrian to pursue his academic interest in cardiac physiology.

Many of you have proactively come to me over the past two years to tell me how excellent Adrian is. We agree. Adrian is absolutely outstanding. His work ethic, high level of professional competence and great desire to help people make him exceptional. We wish him well and will stay in touch professionally, socially and 'on the bike'.

Matthew Donovan will be replacing Adrian. We look forward to introducing him to you in the next newsletter.
